Excerpt

In so many ways, Lydia should have known. From the moment Daniel Joseph had appeared in her office doorway, there had been something about him.

But she hadn’t expected . . . this.

“Unless you tell me to go,” he said in a husky voice,

“I’m going to kiss you.”

As Lydia stared up into his face, they both knew

what she wanted. What she needed. Still, she kept them on the edge for a heartbeat or two.

“I don’t want you to leave.”

“Good,” he growled.

When he lowered his head, there was a rumble of satisfaction in his chest—and then she wasn’t hearing anything. Thinking anything. Worried about anything.

As big and strong as he was, his lips were soft against her own. Gentle, too, as if he knew she wanted to be handled with care—not because she didn’t want him, but because she did. Too much. And God, there were more reasons to pull away than get close to him, except there was no denying the chemistry. The connection. The heat.

And the experience was even better than the anticipation.

Aware that she was going to stop this sooner than she wanted, but much later than she should, Lydia lifted her arms and put them on his shoulders. His heavy body was rock-hard under his windbreaker, the muscles roping up to his neck—and that was where her hands went.

She just wanted to see if his hair was as thick and lush as it looked—

It was.

As she dug into the waves, he purred in response, like he was a great cat and she had found his favorite stroking place. And that was when he wrapped an arm around her waist. She did not feel trapped, though. She had the sense, as he continued to stroke her lips softly, that he would let her go immediately.

Not that she was going anywhere anytime the hell soon.

Inch by inch, their bodies came into full contact, her breasts against his chest, the front of her thighs meeting his, their hips brushing. And then the kiss deepened, his tongue licking into her—

Letting out another moan, she tightened her hold on his nape, in his hair, a sense of desperation making her rougher than she should have been—she was holding him to her now, grabbing on to him. But he was going with it. One of his hands traveled from her shoulder to her waist, to her hip, and she moved against his palm, imagining what it would be like to be naked with him touching her.

With those workman hands.

Daniel eased back and stroked her hair away from her face. “You’re a good kisser, you know that?”

“Am I?” She smiled like an idiot. “I could have sworn it was you.”

“I guess it’s us.” His eyes roamed her face. And then one side of his lips tilted up. “I’m going to go now.”

Lydia exhaled in surprise—but like she was going to sleep with him here on the mauve kitchen floor?

Not a bad idea, actually, she thought as she glanced down.

“Okay,” she said. “I understand. We do work together—”

“That’s not why I’m leaving.”

“So why are you?”

He traced her cheek. Then her jawline. “If I stay, I’m not going to let you get any sleep at all.” He stepped back. “You know where to find me, if you need me. And I’ll see you after we’re allowed to wake up at four-oh-one a.m.”

She nodded. “Good night, Daniel.”

Turning away, he lifted a hand over his shoulder. When he got to the door, he said, “Don’t forget to lock up.”

And then he was gone.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The new book of J.R. Ward follows the mysterious and untouchable Wolven. But it begins from the hard attempts of Lydia to save the wolf preservation she works for as also to unravel the mysteries of her boss, her co-workers and Daniel the new handyman who is also a loner and has more secrets than he gives.

On the other side back in BDB Mansion Xhex is dealing with her own trauma and a prophecy of Vishous that may destroy her and in some way is connected to the Wolven.

While the book was good on setting the plot and the world it felt too lacking the action we are most attuned with. There was mystery and tragedy and so good of a romance but the ending gutted me. It was a cliffhanger too!

This was an exciting read on the other hand and I can not wait to see what will happen especially after the final revelations!

ARC Review: "Vespertine" (Vespertine #1) by Margaret Rogerson

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

From the New York Times bestselling author of Sorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens comes a thrilling new YA fantasy about a teen girl with mythic abilities who must defend her world against restless spirits of the dead.

The dead of Loraille do not rest.

Artemisia is training to be a Gray Sister, a nun who cleanses the bodies of the deceased so that their souls can pass on; otherwise, they will rise as spirits with a ravenous hunger for the living. She would rather deal with the dead than the living, who trade whispers about her scarred hands and troubled past.

When her convent is attacked by possessed soldiers, Artemisia defends it by awakening an ancient spirit bound to a saint’s relic. It is a revenant, a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard. Wielding its extraordinary power almost consumes her—but death has come to Loraille, and only a vespertine, a priestess trained to wield a high relic, has any chance of stopping it. With all knowledge of vespertines lost to time, Artemisia turns to the last remaining expert for help: the revenant itself.

As she unravels a sinister mystery of saints, secrets, and dark magic, her bond with the revenant grows. And when a hidden evil begins to surface, she discovers that facing this enemy might require her to betray everything she has been taught to believe—if the revenant doesn’t betray her first.

REVIEW

I received the e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Well...where to begin from this book? The world which looks like Dark Ages but with a twist in magic? But let us take it from the beginning: Artemisia a nun in training who aspires to be a Gray sister has the power to sense demonic energy and along with the Order they try to have souls pass to the afterlife...without coming back as revenants or demonic spirits to haunt them.

When an attack in her covenant brings her in contact with one powerful relic which houses a malevolent being that threatens to possess her the moment she drops her guard, she will have to deal with more than her dislike to socializing with the living.

Among politics and power-hungry people, war, and a threat that may consume her world, Artemisia and the Revenant in the relic, try to navigate into discovering who may be the true villain and that sometimes magic is not always bad or good. And holiness may hide a part of true villainy.

For a book that had no romance in it, only action and secrets it was enjoyable and very interesting. While I didn't like Artemisia very much in the beginning I enjoyed how she came into power with the relic and her banter with the spirit. The friends she made along the way and the trials she had to face made her braver and by the end of the book, I was hoping for a sequel. While I am not sure if we will ever get one I would like to explore this world more as it has potential for more books.

ARC Review: "Taken to Lemora" (Xiveri Mates #6) by Elizabeth Stephens

Taken to Lemora by Elizabeth Stephens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Raingar
My horns itch and I hate it. I’m a Lemoran clan chief and I hate that I’m being forced to schmooze with the other Quadrant dignitaries.

Looking for a way out, I run into flesh peddlers. Pagh! I hate flesh peddlers and I’m not interested in what they’re selling!

Until I see her…

Half human, Essmira’s soft, and I hate that she’s so easy to break. I hate that her beauty makes my horns and heart both ache. And most of all, I hate that she has no idea that she’s my mate.

Essmira
A female must always smile. She must always aim to please. She must always obey.

A pleasure female, that’s what I’ve spent my whole life training to be. Now that I’ve been purchased by a Lemoran clan chief, I’m more than happy to please him. But his pleasure might be out of my reach.

Because he doesn’t want me to be a pleasure female anymore. He wants me to be…me.

Taken to Lemora is a full length (85k word) SciFi alien romance that features one grumpy alien and a hybrid human female just discovering freedom and eager to grab it by the horns. Literally. Lemora is the not-too-distant neighbor of Voraxia and while this book cameos a couple familiar faces, it focuses on a new couple in a new constellation and can easily be read as a standalone.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

I am a sucker for heroines who discover their own strength after experiencing hardships. Essmira, a woman trained to become a pleasure slave, is rescued by Raingar, the Lemoran clan chief, and she is taken to the Lemora. A planet where anyone can be anything they want. And the loveliest part of this book was how everyone tried to give to Essmira a way of life far from being a slave.

I have to admit that Raingar was hilarious in his grumpy way and how much he adored Essmira. Of course, the cameos of characters from the previous books were welcome as also the mysterious Sky assassin and Ashmara.

I also liked how Essmira had to overcome her trauma which was completely understandable and how much she found support, even if Raingar was a little negative towards her and I wanted to smack some sense into him.

Overall this is yet another amazing sequel to the series which expands this world and makes you carve for the next book!
