Blood Heir by Ilona Andrews
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Summary from GoodReads
From Ilona Andrews, an all-new novel set in the Kate Daniels World and featuring Julie Lennart-Olsen, Kate and Curran's ward.
Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for supremacy, it’s a place caught in a slow apocalypse, where monsters spawn among the crumbling skyscrapers and supernatural factions struggle for power and survival.
Eight years ago, Julie Lennart left Atlanta to find out who she was. Now she’s back with a new face, a new magic, and a new name—Aurelia Ryder—drawn by the urgent need to protect the family she left behind. An ancient power is stalking her adopted mother, Kate Daniels, an enemy unlike any other, and a string of horrifying murders is its opening gambit.
If Aurelia’s true identity is discovered, those closest to her will die. So her plan is simple: get in, solve the murders, prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, and get out without being recognized. She expected danger, but she never anticipated that the only man she'd ever loved could threaten everything.
One small misstep could lead to disaster. But for Aurelia, facing disaster is easy; it’s relationships that are hard.

OMG OMG OMG! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WAIT FOR THE SECOND BOOKS NOW!?
CONTAINS SPOILER YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
*inhales-exhales*
It had been a while since I was in the world of Kate Daniels! And truly despite the rampant magic and the post-apocalyptic feels, it felt like coming home. I loved seeing all the characters, old and new as also discover even more how much I adore Ilona Andrews for creating amazing plots based on mythology, history, and religion.
Faith and old gods never felt scarier.
Aurelia Ryder, AKA Julie, Kate's adopted daughter is all grown up....and in a mission. She returns to Atlanta after 8 years in order to save Kate as there is a new enemy rising. And also Aurelia-Julie will have to deal with the murder of a good pastor, treasure hunters, old relics while at the same time fighting against monsters, shapeshifters who like to stick their snouts in everything and...Derek.
OMG THE SCENES WITH THEM! I loved their interactions, seeing them older and of course, the 'bomb' that exploded close to the end of the book. I mean WOW! that was intense!
I was amazed at Julie and how strong she was. But also she had insecurities and that made her even more human. Some other characters I enjoyed seeing too: Conlan, Ascanio (he can go and eat a shoe), Hugh!
I can not wait to see what will happen in the next book! I need it like...NOW?!
Also, I seriously recommend you to read the Kate Daniels books. The worldbuilding is glorious and deadly and if Netflix wants to have a long-standing series to win the urban fantasy crowd these are the books they should adapt.
About the authors:
Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)
Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.
