Double Review: "Sven the Collector" by Denali Day & "My Soul to Give" (A Demon’s Love #1) by Magali A. Fréchette

Sven the Collector by Denali Day
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Willful and daring, Lady Colette dreams of finding true love with a man who can handle her wild nature without dominating her. Those dreams come crashing down when her doting father decides it’s high time she settle down and marry a weakling lord who could never inspire her passion. While enjoying her final hunt as a free woman, Colette throws caution to the wind and chases her quarry into the dark and forbidding forest known only as “The Twist”.

Wyvern-rider, Sven, has one thing on his mind: capture the beautiful huntress he’s been watching and get her back to his mountain home. Then he can resume his bid to become his clan’s next chieftain. Just as he gets his opportunity, a dagger across his chest alerts him that his would-be-bride possesses far more spirit than he bargained for, but not more than he’s willing to take on.

Stranded together in one of the most dangerous places in the world, a lady and a barbarian find themselves at the mercy of each other as much as the labyrinthian terrain they must escape. Tension grows thick even as time runs short, for something malevolent lurks in the shadows.

Author’s Note: This is not a shifter romance. The Dokiri men are savage enough in their manly forms. That being said, this book features subdued sexual content. Enjoy the heat but don’t expect to get singed.

Trigger warning: This novel plays on the trope of abduction. While Dokiri men won’t let anything keep them from the woman they love, even that woman herself, all sexual acts in this book are consensual.

REVIEW

I received an e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have to admire a heroine who not only doesn't lose her wits completely after being taken by a dragon rider, but she also poisons him and ties him up! This was an enjoyable read with Colette as a strong heroine (albeit sometimes annoying) and Sven who though he could claim his 'bride' and instead got her.

The chemistry worked well between them and by the end of the book I was enjoying it very much.

About the author:

When Denali Day was trying to figure out “what to be when she grew up” she noticed all her written stories featured a scene where the beautiful heroine patched up the wounds of a gallant hero. So she decided to become a nurse. Twelve years and two degrees later, she realized all she ever really wanted was to be a writer.

Now she lives in the midwest with her adoring husband, a real life gallant hero, and their two wicked goblins (children). When she isn’t writing she’s reading and when she’s not doing either of those things she’s probably plundering the fridge for something she can smother in whipped cream.

REVIEW

I received an e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say that Magali gave back to the 'demonic' aspect of her characters the terrifying visage we all knew and feared back in the days before demons were romanticized and became closer to the YA spectrum. Everyone here passes through hardships, treachery, secrets and a romance that hides more secrets than any can count.
Frankly, I admired Celina; I would have become an empty shell of myself after everything she's been through in this book. And I was surprised! I mean the jaw-drop surprise something I haven't felt since the last Sarah J. Maas/Leigh Bardugo book.

This was very interesting and I'll keep an eye for the sequel.

About the author:

Being an extremist, she loves both the dark aspects of life and everything sweet. All her stories are either set in Canada where she lives or in alternate worlds she made up while living within her imagination. When not writing, she thinks of the next scene or plot while enjoying her work as a cover designer. Although she has a fascination for monsters, with a bachelor degree in criminology, she understands there’s no need to create the paranormal; humans are capable of inflicting nightmares of their own.
