REVIEW

This book had one of the most explosive endings I've ever seen! Action, battles, secrets, conspiracies and romance!

After their close escape from the Komizar, Lia and Rafe race against time in order to warn the kingdoms of the coming threat. With a song in her ears and the determination she has, Lia becomes in this book one of the strongest characters I've ever seen. Some would say that she looks like Aelin/ Celaena but I disagree.
While my fire-breathing queen was trained as an assassin, Lia begins as a princess who in the course of the trilogy becomes stronger, trains in order to protect herself and at the same time she is a scholar. I loved every part of her in this book; from her courage and her ability to even make hard desicions to her stuborn behavior. How everyone expected her to be just a weak princess and she proved them ALL WRONG!

Now, Rafe was also a major factor in the story. Despite his love for Lia, we also see here a bad side, which is born from fear mostly. His relationship with Lia had its ups and downs and it made my heart ache every time I had to read through both their POVs.

And Kaden; he also goes under a major character development here even if he gets his happy ending in a rushed way. Also the supposed love triangle here is resolved in a very smooth way and early in the book too! The plot is not driven by the love triangle but instead from the hard desicions everyone in this story had to make.

The ending was hard for me. Until the last page I didn't know what would happen between Lia and Rafe, but when THAT scene was shown it was one of the sweetest moments I've ever read!

I will miss this trilogy. It was one of the best ones I've completed and I hope Mary E. Pearson will continue to write such amazing stories! ;)

And don't miss the rest books of the series!

Review: "The Heart of Betrayal" (The Remnant Chronicles #2) by Mary E. Pearson

Hello everyone! These past days have been quite tiring and I apologise for the tiny drop-out I had. Between reading for exams and...reading in general I didn't have the chance to post much. But I'll try and redeem this week! ;)

The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save Lia's life, her erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.

Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: There's Rafe, who lied to Lia but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be savages. Now that she lives among them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

REVIEW

In the heart-pounding sequel of the Remnant Chronicles, Lia, Rafe and Kaden will try to survive in the depths of Venda with enemies all around them and secrets about the world's past which are shown through Lia's eyes.

This book! How well developed and good it was! With many secondary characters and many hidden secrets! There is definitely no SBS (Second Book Syndrome) here for which I am glad. I am sure that the Komisar had his reasons to hate the rest of the kingdoms but never to the point of insanity. While Rafe has sacrificed his freedom to keep Lia safe, Kaden on the other hand is doing everything he can to keep her alive.

Some may persume that there is a strong love triangle here, which is not true. I don't think it was shown like other YA where obviously the heroine wants both of the male characters, because Lia had much more important problems to deal with than swooning over the men.

The ending was epic with action and fighting. And a cliffhanger I really liked! Recommended for its stunning worldbuilding and well-developed characters!

Review: "The Last Star" (The 5th Wave, #3) by Rick Yancey. Not the ending I was expecting

REVIEW

I wanted to read this book a WHOLE year! A year of waiting, hoping to have a BAM ending, a year in which I still haven't seen the movie and I don't know if I will.
As Cass and the gang try to find a way and stop the imminent world destruction and Ringer has her own moral issues to deal with, the aliens are also coming on Earth. That's the plot in general. Now, what happens into the plot that's something you need to read in order to find out.

Although I respect the way Rick Yansey wrote this series, setting the moral issues of an apocalyptic world and the humanity as a principle at stake, I had hoped for a better ending. I don't know if some events could be written differently or some characters could be saved from their choices but the ending gutted me.

And if you want a clue, the ending was a lot like "Allegiant". In my opinion, Evan Walken was the one who lost the most here, not to mention Sam. So despite its amazing writing style and world building, at least for me, I had hope for a better ending in this amazing series.

And don't miss the rest books of this series!

About the author:

Rick is a native Floridian and a graduate of Roosevelt University in Chicago. He earned a B.A. in English which he put to use as a field officer for the Internal Revenue Service. Inspired and encouraged by his wife, he decided his degree might also be useful in writing books and in 2004 he began writing full-time.

Since then he has launched two critically acclaimed series: The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp, for young readers, and The Highly Effective Detective, for adults. Both books are set in Knoxville, Tennessee, where Rick lived for ten years before returning to Florida.

    THE POST PROMPT:

What is your favorite opening scene?

    MY ANSWER:

There are many opening scenes that I love. This year I had the luck to read two books that made me have so many feels I couldn't even review them. One of them is "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgenstern, which opens with the scene of the magical circus arriving without notice and slowly the circus is described. In every new chapter, there is more and more of the circus to see.

Another favorite opening scene comes from Laini Taylor's series "Daughter of Smoke and Bone". And it goes like this:

"Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love.

    It did not end well."

Review: "This Savage Song" (Monsters of Verity #1) by Victoria Schwab

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

    Summary from GoodReads

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.

    REVIEW

I really need someone to give Victoria Schwab an author's Oscar because she outdid herself with this book! If Vicious had set the difference between heroes and villains, A Darker Shade of Magic for the ones who need to find their true selves, then This Savage Song was a masterpiece about humans who are monsters and monsters who want to be human.

Kate is the daughter of the most horrible mafia-like boss of Verity, a city divided in two where if you want to live you must pay for your protection or die trying to hide from the monsters who rule in the night. She wants to be like her father, to prove her worth and she does make some very hard-core choices in order to succeed.

Now Augustus, my sweet precious love, is a monster who wants to live like a human. His nature is alluring and deadly, yet he loves music, loves anything mundane and wishes he was different in order to blend in.

                                                                    (credit goes to the artist)

How those two come together? Well, that gives a lot from the plot and I never spoiler! ;) But the descriptions and the worldbuilding are phenomenal just like the rest of Victoria's books and despite the fact that there is no romance, I couldn't help but think that at the end of the book, after everything Kate and Augustus had been through, there was some kind of closeness between them.

    I can only hope.

If you want music and creepy monsters, ethics and a sweet male character, who needs many hugs by the way, then this is your book! ;)

    About the author:

Victoria is the product of a British mother, a Beverly Hills father, and a southern upbringing. Because of this, she has been known to say "tom-ah-toes," "like," and "y'all."

    She also tells stories.

She loves fairy tales, and folklore, and stories that make her wonder if the world is really as it seems.

Review: "Ivory & Bone" (Ivory & Bone #1) by Julie Eshbaugh. Let's clear some misundertandings.

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

    Summary from GoodReads

A prehistoric fantasy—with allusions to Pride and Prejudice.

Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe—that’s the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless—and nearly grave—mistake. However, there’s something more to Mya’s cool disdain…a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya’s past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.

As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he’s trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo—Kol doesn’t know which—had been planning all along.

    REVIEW

Torn between writing my review for this book or "This Savage song" by V. Schwab, I decided to give into my turmoil and the disappointment I felt when I read the book.realized why so many bloggers found it lacking or not for their taste.

Taking a deep breath. Here I go.

"Ivory and Bone" takes place in the prehistoric times. If you are not familiar with Pre-History or Paleo-Archaeology, think of the book as Disney's "Brother Bear", but for YA.

Kol and his family, also his clan, live in a well-forested area which is close to the sea and rivers. It's a hunter's life, meaning that they have to hunt for caribou, mammoths, occasional greens and honey. When another family from another clan joins Kol's family in a hunt and he meets Mya, then Kol will have to battle his growing feelings for her as also the secrets and rumors that haunt Mya's clan history.

First of all, let's praise how well imagined Julie's worldbuilding is: it's hard to create a prehistoric setting, take care to also describe the pre-historic tools and tents AND add in the relationships with the characters. The first ones need deep research. We had in uni a special course about tools and hunting gear in the pre-historic times and I assure you, the author did her best.

Secondly, let's talk about the relationships. In some reviews, I read that the romance was like insta-love or forced. Which is not true. Imagine living in a world where your cat is the size of Diego from "Ice Age" and wants to eat you for dinner, and also the human species is AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FOOD CHAIN! You'll have to rethink about a boyfriend/girlfriend.

Kol's mother acts in many occasions in the book as a matchmaker, because the clan NEEDS to have more people in order to survive. It's instinct. There's no internet or a cinema or a freaking bookstore to go for a date!

Hunting for honey though acted as a good idea. Mya was an annoying character and made Kol second-thinking of his feelings but it was worth in the end.

Lastly, the POV: Kol's POV is the one called "the second POV", meaning that whatever he says it is directed to Mya, like he is telling her a story. I really couldn't understand why some fellow bloggers gave 2 stars because of the POV.
There is another book I know that it has the same POV as Ivory and Bone and that is "Stolen: A Letter to My Captor" by Lucy Christopher. It's the story of a girl who is abducted and her captor expects her to fall in love with him. The book is amazing and also written in the form of letters in the second POV.

True, the narrator of the second POV is directing his story to a person he wants and not the readers but that does not diminish how good the book is.

The ending was good and I was surprised to see that this is a trilogy. I'll be looking forward to reading the next books and hope that the author will give more adventures of Kol and Mya. ;)

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

    REVIEW

I received an ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This was my very first Kasie West novel and honestly, I loved it! I had all of her other books added to my TBR list yet I couldn't find the time to read them. I really need to check my reading program.

In "P.S. I like you" Lily is a high school girl who loves music and songwriting. Though she has some different senses in her clothing style she is also a good friend and has a loving family, albeit a funny one. When the notes she uses get answered by a mysterious student, she begins to find someone who understands her fears and her love for music.

Now, the point to the story was not only to find who the secret penfriend was but also for Lily to grow emotionally into her confidence and try to become more open not only to her family but also to her friends. I laughed with her brothers and the evil rabbit as also how good her parents were with all the children.

It was an enjoyable and a good read which has added Kasie West to my auto-approving authors! Recommended for its sweet romance and funny moments. ;)
