Summary from GoodReads
Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by #1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward.
Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on... except for his brother, iAm.
iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around... but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.
Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice...

REVIEW
It's strongly adviced to read the rest of the books if you want to understand the review. If you are familiar with the series, then you know what I will talk about.
I've never reviewed any of Ward's books. None.At.All. Because simply they are a great series and she is an author who likes to mess with her characters, put them in funny and heart-breaking moments, yet proving to all her readers that they are strong.
Not to mention that these vampires are badasses, like to eat as well drink blood
BUT! But, I had the chance to read one of Ward's posts on GoodReads which happened to have many, many spoilers. For a moment I stared on the screen wondering "WTF had I read just now?" and "WHY did she do this?"
So I decided to read "The Shadows" and write my one and only review on this book.
Selena is one of the Chosen who also happenes to have some serious problems (I will not spoil you!). On the other hand Trez and his brother iAm have to deal with their own inner issues as also the threat of their clan. Add to this all the sub-plots Ward always like to have and whoila! You become an emotional wreck, crying from page 25 of 592, with fat tears falling on the tablet's screen.
Trez is a vampire of many talents, not like the Brotherhood, but good enough to become loyal and very emotional. His turmoil undid me while on the other hand iAm's story was a small ray of light in the general brooding of the novel. At the same time we get three subplots: Layla and Xcor, Paradise and Craeg (who will introduce the spin-off series) and Assail, who still hasn't gone after Sol (Ward must do something for this).
After the story was over, three packs of tissues gone and some chocolate in my system,
I wondered a lot about why Ward wrote the book like this. In the end, this story was a message for those who believe and hope that death is the ending. Maybe it is, but for most of us death and life belong in the same coin and if we fear the ending we will never live, love, enjoy life.
I will need a better sequel from Ward next time and by judging the one I found on GoodReads, let's hope we will not mourn more victims. Also I want some plots done unless the author plans to torture us more.
Overall, I did like the book and its message. I just couldn't stand wailing page after page.
