Review: "Ruined" (Ruined #1) by Amy Tintera

Ruined by Amy Tintera
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

A revenge that will consume her. A love that will ruin her.

Emelina Flores has nothing. Her home in Ruina has been ravaged by war. She lacks the powers of her fellow Ruined. Worst of all, she witnessed her parents’ brutal murders and watched helplessly as her sister, Olivia, was kidnapped.

But because Em has nothing, she has nothing to lose. Driven by a blind desire for revenge, Em sets off on a dangerous journey to the enemy kingdom of Lera. Somewhere within Lera’s borders, Em hopes to find Olivia. But in order to find her, Em must infiltrate the royal family.

In a brilliant, elaborate plan of deception and murder, Em marries Prince Casimir, next in line to take Lera’s throne. If anyone in Lera discovers Em is not Casimir’s true betrothed, Em will be executed on the spot. But it’s the only way to salvage Em’s kingdom and what is left of her family.

Em is determined to succeed, but the closer she gets to the prince, the more she questions her mission. Em’s rage-filled heart begins to soften. But with her life—and her family—on the line, love could be Em’s deadliest mistake.

REVIEW

While many pitched this book in comparison with other books I haven't read, I simply dove into this story because it was Amy Tintera. I had loved her "Reboot" duology, which was dystopian and was surprised to learn that she would also write fantasy. Her writing is unique with a livid voice.

So, Emelina Flores, daughter of the most fierce Queen of the Ruined, has lost everything. Her powerful sister, her homeland and also she has no powers. Armed with her wit, deception and a crazy plan, she posts as the fiance to Prince Casimir who she marries hoping to take her revenge.

I liked how the world was built. There is discrimination against the Ruined, people who have abilities similar to that of elementals, a wide gap between poor and rich as also politics and secrets. I liked how badass Em was. Determined, despite the scrutiny she gets from her own people, because she doesn't have any Ruined powers, she marches into enemy territory knowing that she might die.

Casimir may be a weak character, who later finds the courage to stand up against his parents and find an ally to Em. The romance is slow burning and I prefered that to the insta-romance I've seen lately. The ending was kind of a cliffhanger which left me with the need to read more!

If you love a good fantasy this is recommended. ;)

Cover Reveal: "The Alchemists of Loom" by Elise Kova

Hello and welcome to yet another cover reveal! This one was unexpected, yet I couldn't help but come up quickly with a post in order to welcome the new addition on my TBR list and I hope yours too!

Make sure to read the synopsis and pre-order now! Just look at this beauty!

Synopsis

Her vengeance. His vision.
Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.
Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.
When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.
He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

    Summary from GoodReads

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

Abe desperately wants that second chance at love...even if he knows he doesn’t deserve it.

But can he convince Sarah – now strong and independent without him – to risk her wounded heart one more time?

    About the author:

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

Release Day Blitz+Giveaway: "Abducted" (Alien Mate Index #1) by Evangeline Anderson

    Abducted
    Evangeline Anderson
    (Alien Mate Index #1)
    Publication date: June 11th 2016
    Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction
My name is Zoe McKinley. I have a boring life, an awful job, and a boss that throws staplers at my head. What could be worse?
How about being abducted by Aliens?
Being dragged through a mirror, naked and screaming, onto an extraterrestrial ship was bad. Finding out I had been sold to a huge alien male who looks like the Devil was worse. But learning he wanted to trade me to an intergalactic petting zoo was the worst of all!
Now I’m whizzing through the galaxy with a robot butler, a trio of nib-nibs (they’re like tiny green monkeys) and one huge, muscular, and very grumpy alien. The clothing they gave me shows all my lady-bits, the food-sim makes banana cream pie that tastes like sauerkraut, and Sarden, my captor, is too hot to stay mad at, even if he is a jerk.
In fact, I think I might be falling for him.
    What’s a girl to do? It’s all in a day’s work when you’ve been…Abducted.

    EXCERPT:

The alien face looked at me speculatively. It was male—that much was clear. Strong features and gold eyes with vertical pupils like a cat’s stared back at me. He had cheekbones sharp enough to cut yourself on and a nose that looked like it had been broken at least once. A neatly clipped mustache and goatee framed sensual lips that looked cruelly amused. He had dark red skin—almost maroon—I could see a lot of that because he appeared to be wearing a black, wife-beater type t-shirt that left his muscular arms bare.
Actually, except for the cat eyes and red skin, he looked strangely human. Well, except for the horns.
Did I mention he had freaking horns?
Because he did—little short, sharp pointed ones, growing out either side of his forehead—right at his temples.
I stared at them, dumbfounded, unable to speak for a moment. And that’s unusual for me because I’m almost always shooting off my mouth.
All I could think was, the Devil. Oh my God, the freaking Devil was staring at me from the mirror of the handicapped bathroom at Lauder, Lauder and Associates and I had no idea what to do.
My mind started going over all the things I’d done wrong recently. Okay, I might have fudged a little on my taxes. Using my laptop to check reports while I lay on the couch watching Sherlock reruns on Netflix counts as having a home office—right? And then there was the time I accidentally shoplifted a pair of socks. I forgot I had them in my hand and walked right out of the store with them. And then I was too embarrassed to bring them back so I guess I basically stole them but I didn’t mean to so—
Suddenly, the Devil spoke, ending my train of thought as thoroughly as though it had run into the side of a mountain.
“Yes,” he said in a deep, growling voice. “She is the one.”
The one for what? The one to drag straight down to Hell and poke in the ass with a fiery pitchfork? Oh my God, was cheating on my taxes and shoplifting socks that bad?
“I…I’m sorry,” I stuttered but just then another voice—a piping, high voice like a Disney animal—answered him.
“If you are certain this female is the one Your Eminence requires, than I shall begin the transport at once.”
Transport? What Transport? Instinctively, I began backing away from the haunted mirror to Hell but then the swirling started again. And this time there was a wind that went with it.
A sucking, howling wind that dragged at me, pulling me towards the mirror.
“Help!” I screamed, or tried to scream, anyway. My voice was lost in the vortex as I was pulled closer and closer to the mirror.
My feet left the floor and I put out my hands, trying to stop my forward momentum. My phone clattered into the sink and I could hear Leah and Charlotte shouting on the other end of it but their voices seemed tiny and distant.
My hand connected to the mirror…and sank into it. I gasped in fear as I saw first my hand and then my whole arm swallowed up in the swirling psychedelic colors. My other hand and arm followed and suddenly the mirror was right in front of my face.
And then I felt myself getting sucked in completely. Lauder, Lauder and Associates disappeared and the last thing I heard was my two best friends frantically screaming my name.
    Then…nothing.
Who knew the gateway to Hell was located in the employees’ bathroom?

“Who said anything about your talent affecting you, Zoe- It’s the way in which you affect others that makes you so damn special.-

Ending a series with conflicting feelings. Reviews for "Golden Son" & "Morning Star" (Red Rising #2 #3) by Pierce Brown

So I was finally able to finish the Red Rising series. It was one of the best sci-fi books in the world building aspect but still I couldn't help but feel a little off about the two sequels after the first book. My review for the first one was generous since I had a copy but not the courage to read it, so the following reviews will be as honest as I can make them.

    Golden Son by Pierce Brown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

    Summary from GoodReads

With shades of The Hunger Games, Ender’s Game, and Game of Thrones, debut author Pierce Brown’s genre-defying epic Red Rising hit the ground running and wasted no time becoming a sensation.

Golden Son continues the stunning saga of Darrow, a rebel forged by tragedy, battling to lead his oppressed people to freedom from the overlords of a brutal elitist future built on lies. Now fully embedded among the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his work to bring down Society from within.

A life-or-death tale of vengeance with an unforgettable hero at its heart, Golden Son guarantees Pierce Brown’s continuing status as one of fiction’s most exciting new voices.

Following the events of "Red Rising", Darrow enters the House of his archenemy, the man who killed his wife, and so he begins his game of destroying the Gold society system from the inside.
Truthfully, I began enjoying the book close to its middle. Darrow even in a society full of enemies, still manages to outshine them, to the point of feeling...well a little too shiny. It felt as if he was the ONLY ONE who could kill the bad guys, make the plans, outsmart everything and everyone.

The supporting characters of Mustang and Sevro are still present and I loved every banter and discussion Darrow had with Sevro. I think I kind of like the guy. He is horrible in a disturbingly cute way?

    LOL, someone hit me now!

The book has also non-stop action. I never felt bored with the scenes of battle and how easily it was for me, a person who prefers History to Math, to understand every related to astronomy and space fighting. All the scenes were Star Wars/ Star Trek worthy.

We also get to meet some new characters, like the giant Obsidian warrior Ragnar, and the scarred proud woman Victra. The ending of the second book, had me screaming to the pages. After a sweet scene between Darrow and Mustang, everything happened too fast and I didn't even had the chance to feel anything. Rage, sadness, horror? I don't know but I felt conflicted.

     Morning Star by Pierce Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

On "Morning Star" I can tell with certainty that Pierce Brown managed to explore more his characters. He does not stay only into Darrow, who also undergoes a horrible experience and tries to resurface as the main character, but though Darrow's POV we get to see more of his allies. Kavax and his fox, Mustang, Roque and Sevro with Victra.

I would note especially the last two because I loved every mention to them. There is also a chapter that is kind of dedicated to them? Sevro has lost so much I was quite glad to see the guy smiling.

I would even hug him, if he didn't threaten me with poisonous mushrooms.

There is also a good map on the beginning of the book, showing the Solar System. Knowing something about astronomy I found it quite amazing how Pierce showed the evolution of the human colonization on the whole system. From Hermes to Pluto. (yes for me Pluto will ALWAYS BE A PLANET!)

Was I surprised about some events? Yes. I didn't expect Ragnar and his family to be so...lovey-dovey (insert irony here please). Also, I didn't like how the Golds treated Scandinavian mythology. True, the mythology is pessimistic and not so sunny, but there was no reason to alter a whole planet, terraform it into an icy hell and make them treat each other like savages. But again, with fear you can rule everything (the golden rule of dystopian novels you see).

The ending was good with a sprinkle of surprise. I like the fact the everything was left uncertain since we will get a new trilogy of the series and I would to see more of Servo. All and all it was very satisfying.

As always don't miss the amazing fanart created by @PhantomRin who posts her art on Tumblr. Here's some fine examples:

     About the author:
Pierce Brown's first novel, RED RISING (Del Rey Books), debuts January 28, 2014. It is the first installment in The Red Rising Trilogy.

Pierce Brown spent his childhood building forts and setting traps for his cousins in the woods of six states and the deserts of two. Graduating college in 2010, he fancied the idea of continuing his studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a magical bone in his body. So while trying to make it as a writer, he worked as a manager of social media at a startup tech company, toiled as a peon on the Disney lot at ABC Studios, did his time as an NBC page, and gave sleep deprivation a new meaning during his stint as an aide on a U.S. Senate Campaign.

Now he lives in Los Angeles, where he scribbles tales of spaceships, wizards, ghouls, and most things old or bizarre.
