In a world plagued by constant earthquakes and volcanic debris, people in the valley struggle to survive while those on top of the hill want for nothing. This is where I come in. I spend my nights plundering supplies in the walled city of Hilltop, and I trade them to the valley people below. I’m not a thief.  I prefer to be known as the head of Lost and Found. When I discover a beautiful but dangerous competitor in my territory, I also learn she knows more about me than she should. Is she a spy sent by my father, or is she a rebel like me? I don’t trust her, but together we’ll discover secrets that may destroy what’s left of our world. There have always been those with wealth and those without. My name is Talen, and I’m here to even the score.

Blog Tour+ARC Review: "Anton" (Chicago Blaze #1) by Brenda Rothert

Anton by Brenda Rothert

Chicago Blaze, #1

AVAILABLE NOW

Amazon | Nook | Kobo | Apple Books

Book Blurb:

He’s known as Father Anton to his teammates—the brooding, sexy captain of the NHL’s Chicago Blaze has a reputation for…not having a reputation. Just like his diet and sleep routines, celibacy is part of Anton Petrov’s on-ice mojo. Or so they say. Anton stays mum on the subject. If the world thinks he chooses to abstain from sex, so be it. Better that than the truth getting out: there is a woman he burns for, but he can never have her. She’s his teammate’s wife, after all. Mia Marceau is finally on her own. Now that she and her husband are living apart, she’s finding the peace she was desperate for. She spends her days in classes and late nights bartending, making her own way in the world at last. After what she’s been through, as long as her husband leaves her alone, she doesn’t plan to rock the boat. He still has the power to hurt those dearest to her, and she can’t demand a divorce with such a high cost. A chance encounter with Mia has Anton hoping for a shot he never thought he’d get. And while she’s drawn to the intense, serious hockey center, Mia’s leery about playing with fire. That’s all Anton has ever known for Mia, though—a living, burning desire that won’t be denied—no matter the cost.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Anton and Mia's story is one of heartache, longing and the power you discover inside yourself. Mia suffers abuse from her husband while at the same time she tries to hide her own wounded heart. Anton is a man who had fallen in love with her long before he truly met her.

The plot is steady and the development of the characters is very well written. I also enjoyed the side characters and I wonder who will be next in this new series. Very emotional and a recommended read.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I KNEW THAT JENNIFER WAS GOING TO LEAVE THE BEST ONE FOR LAST! Devlin, the elusive secretive character from this trilogy has been one of the most anticipated ones, who I wanted to read about even from book one! Knowing that also Rosie was in the mix, I knew that I expected something amazing to go down.

BUT I DIDN'T EXPECT THE PLOT TWISTS! Jesus, one after the other the plot twists kept coming, with a slight touch of supernatural in it. Since the story takes place in New Orleans, I expected nothing less. But Devlin who appeared to be so cold and distanced actually had the most scars of all the brothers. And Rosie, beautiful Rosie with her optimism and a funny character whose heart is so big!

I admit that Dev didn't act right towards Rosie at the beginning of the book and I wanted to punch him very much, but knowing the danger and the enemies that he has, I forgave him. Just a little. But after chapter 19 the s*t hit the fan and I was scrolling through my Kindle with growing horror and surprise.

You will not be disappointed! Jennifer Armentrout delivers one hell of an amazing conclusion to this series, though I KOW that she MUST write one MORE book here!

Review: "The Gilded Wolves" (The Gilded Wolves #1) by Roshani Chokshi

The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

summary from GoodReads

Set in a darkly glamorous world, The Gilded Wolves is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous but thrilling adventure.

Paris, 1889: The world is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. In this city, no one keeps tabs on secrets better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier, Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. But when the all-powerful society, the Order of Babel, seeks him out for help, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.

To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts: An engineer with a debt to pay. A historian who can't yet go home. A dancer with a sinister past. And a brother in all but blood, who might care too much.

Together, they'll have to use their wits and knowledge to hunt the artifact through the dark and glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the world, but only if they can stay alive.

REVIEW

I remember seeing the cover and the blurb of this book and thinking: "oh, History, magic and romance! Yesss"

Well, this book surpassed my expectations and made me CARVE FOR THE SEQUEL! Not to mention that the dynamics of this group were amazing!

Set in the dazzling Paris in the end of 19th century, the story follows Severin, Laila, Zofia, Enrique, Tristan and Hypnos all with their own stories, fears, and loves will try and stop a mysterious power from seizing the source which gives the humans of this alternative world the power of Forging. While I did get vibes of Six of Crows in this one, the plot was quite different, filled with lush descriptions, gorgeous costumes, masks and clothes and above all, diversity. Laila is Indian, Enrique in half Philippino, half Spanish, Zofia is Jew, Hypnos is also half white half black from the New Orleans and each and every one of them suffers through discrimination and even racism.

Severin though, he was the one who had to shoulder everything; driven from his desire to restore his birthright and become rich, hoping that through this way he could help his friends, he truly lost his true love and way to happiness. He constantly fears that he will remain alone by the end of the book and always remembers one night with Laila that haunts him. Seriously, the slow-burning romance here is agonizing!

And the ending? I was left in a husk of sadness, aching and fear for what is coming in the second book, because not only we have quite the revelation but also...the clock is ticking fast...especially for Laila.

Highly recommended!

  EXCERPT

~SCARLETT~

Evangeline fans herself. “That boy is hot.”
Hot isn’t exactly the word I would use for him. Hot somehow feels…lacking. Hot is for some boy in our gym class who has recently grown facial hair. Jess Lachlin is no boy. He has fire-red hair, a sun kissed tan from all the hours working on his land, deep green eyes and a body made to handle rough, rugged days.
I might have been ignoring Jesse for years, but I’ve seen him. Every girl in this school has gone out of her way to drive or walk along one of the country roads to watch Jesse as he works his land. Living across the street, I’ve had a front-row view. His shirt off, drenched in sweat, muscles rippling as he moves, the way he sometimes pauses in his front yard and looks across the road as if he knows I’m watching. A fluttering in my chest and then—
“Would you date him?” Evangeline asks.
“No.” Camila’s answer is swift. “And it’s not like he dates anyone. Except for his friends, the boy is a recluse.”
“Why wouldn’t you?” The kneejerk question surprises even me when it pops out of my mouth. Camila and Evangeline look at me as if those were the first words I’d ever spoken. If I could hide under the circulation desk without making this moment worse, I would.
“Besides the fact he’s cursed and anyone a Lachlin falls in love with drops dead?” Camila walks toward me and Evangeline follows. Camila watches me with more curiosity than I care for, but it’s nice that she’s moving the conversation in my direction. “Jesse’s a train wreck, and he taints anyone in his vicinity. Dating him would be a social, emotional and literal death sentence.”
I’m familiar with the curse, and it’s no truer than Glory and her prophesies. “That sounds melodramatic.”
“It’s not.” Camila has a swear-to-God seriousness to her. “Mom and Dad had Bible study at our house last night, and Pastor Hughes came. Everyone thought I was in the basement, but I went to the kitchen for something to drink, and I heard Pastor Hughes ask everyone what they knew about Jesse.”
Eavesdropping. How Camila.
“Did you know that before Veronica started hanging with Jesse that she was on track to be a concert pianist?” Camila says.
“Seriously?” Evangeline tilts her head in disbelief, and I’ll admit to putting down my cell.
“Seriously. And Leo Wheeling was a star soccer player, predicted to be the first freshman to play varsity for our high school, and then he started hanging out with Jesse.”
Faint middle school memories of hearing Leo’s name over the announcements regarding soccer emerge in my mind.
“Then someone said that before Nazareth Kravitz moved here, he had taken the ACT in the seventh grade and received a perfect score. He moved here, met Jesse and the rest is history.”
Nazareth sleeps through most of our classes, that is, when he bothers showing for school.
I nibble on my bottom lip as I’m not sure how much I like the Jesse-is-the-devil enthusiasm. I may share the opinion, but that doesn’t mean anyone else should.
“Of course, then there’s Jesse himself. Drinking, drugs.”
“The fights,” Evangeline pipes in.
“Don’t forget the suspensions—”
“And he’s been arrested!” Evangeline finishes Camila’s statement like the two share a brain. Her eyes sparkle like that precious piece of scandalous gossip was just too good not to spread.
“The boy is a walking disaster,” Camila continues. “Anyone who hangs out with him wants to become a loser. It doesn’t matter he’s going to be a millionaire once he sells his grandmother’s land. Anyone who spends time with Jesse is asking for hurt.”
“And death.”

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

*trigger warning for both body and verbal abuse*

While this book didn't give me the strong feels I have connected with every other book by Katie McGarry, I really enjoyed Jesse's and Scarlett's stories despite the small hint of a 'curse' and all the emotional trials both had to recover from. I did like Jesse's friends a lot and I hope they'll get their own stories.

Despite that, the book should have a trigger warning, because this was a hard and too emotional read for me. Overall you do get the beautiful writing by Katie McGarry who manages to craft a story of love, loss the power to overcome your fears.

Katie McGarry Bio: Katie is the author of the PUSHING THE LIMITS series, THUNDER ROAD series, SAY YOU’LL REMEMBER ME, and the upcoming YA novel, ONLY A BREATH APART. Her novels have received starred reviews, critical acclaim and have won multiple awards including being a multiple Goodreads Choice Award Finalist for YA Fiction, multiple RT Magazine's Reviewer's Choice Award Finalist for Best YA Fiction, including a win in the category, and she was a 2013 YALSA Top Ten Teen Pick.
