Cover Reveal+Excrept+Giveaway: "Superfan" by Sarina Bowen

BLURB:
Sometimes lady luck shakes your hand, and sometimes she smacks your face. Sometimes she does both on the same day.
Three years ago I met the most amazing woman. We were both down on our luck. Then I got that call—the one that tells you to get your buns on a plane to go meet your destiny.
But the girl was left behind. I didn’t have her phone number, and she didn’t know my real name.
While I became a professional hockey player, she became a superstar, with platinum records and legions of fans. And a slick, music producer boyfriend who treated her badly.
But fate wasn’t done with us yet. When Delilah turns up at a hockey game, I can’t resist making contact. The internet swoons when I ask her out on a date.
She might not remember me. But her jerkface ex does. He’ll do anything to keep us apart.

Good thing athletes never give up. This time I’m playing for keeps.

EXCERPT

“Would you like a beer?” the cute bartender asks me.
I glance at the pile of mint leaves on his cutting board and hesitate. “Sure,” I say. But the mint looks so fresh and pretty.
“I could make you something different.”
“Beer is great. A cold…”
“—lager,” he finishes. “No glass, no opener.”
When I look up to flash him a smile, my heart does a little somersault. Those kind eyes are smiling at me, too.
“Thank you,” I whisper.
“It’s really no problem.” He turns toward the beer cooler. “You’re an easy customer, trust me.”
But I really meant—thank you for remembering. As he leans down to grab a bottle for me, I find myself admiring the strong muscles in his back. Stop it, I admonish myself. It only gets worse when he turns around and places the bottle in front of me. I’ve never seen hands like his. I didn’t even know wrists could look muscular.
Even so. Ogling him is not why I came here. I pull out my keychain opener and remove the cap from my beer.
He discards it, gives me another pleasant smile and then picks up his paring knife again.
I take a sip, wondering when he’s going to mention my show at the Coconut Club. He was there. I saw him.
He separates some mint leaves from their stems and says nothing.
I last about seventeen seconds. “Well?”
“Well?” He looks up. “Sorry?”
“Jesus lord.” I close my eyes and then open them again. This is not going how I’d hoped it would. “What did you think?”
“Of…?” His amazing eyes are studying me.
“Forget I asked.” I take a swig of beer.
“Think about what?” He pushes the cutting board aside, and his smile turns knowing.
“My set at the Coconut Club! I saw you holding up that wall in the back. Don’t lie.”
He tips his head back and lets out a sudden laugh. “I’m so busted. I loved your show, but I didn’t expect you to spot me.”
“You loved it so much you weren’t going to say anything?” The sentence sounds crazy to my own ears. I put down the beer. “You know what? Never mind. I’m just being psycho right now. This town is getting into my head.”
“Listen, girly.” He braces both (muscular!) hands on the bar and looks me right in the eye. “I loved it so much that I don’t even know what to say about it. From that moment at the beginning—when you shut that asshole’s maw? To the part where you made a lady cry.” He shakes his head. “I couldn’t look away. And I never wanted it to end.”
I give him a slow blink, just trying to take that in. It’s so much more than I was even hoping to hear.
“Shit, Delilah. If that set doesn’t win you whatever contract you’re looking for, they don’t even deserve you.”
Something warm and unfamiliar settles into the center of my belly. “That might be the nicest thing anyone ever said to me. Which only means you’re still trying to get my phone number.”
He laughs immediately. “Can’t both things be true? Both my musical assessment and my interest in your evening plans?”
“Because you know so much about music.” I flip my hair and take another sip of beer.
“Look. I don’t know shit about music. But I know plenty about talent.” He leans down on a set of forearms I shouldn’t be noticing. “I know that talent sometimes takes a nap at just the wrong moment, but it never stays asleep for long. I also know that luck matters, too. If they don’t give you what you want, it won’t be your fucking fault.”
“Thank you,” I say quietly.
But he’s not done. “I saw something else valuable the other night. You’re good in the clinch. And that counts for double, I swear to God.”
“The clinch?”
“Yeah. You’re not just good at practice.” He pauses, wrinkling up his interesting nose. “What word would a musician use? Okay—you’re not a rehearsal musician. That stage was like your home. Either that or you fake it really well. That’s going to pay your rent someday, I promise.”
“Wow.” It’s like he looked right into my terrified little soul and found the very thing I needed to hear. Those beautiful eyes of his are practically burning me right now, so I have to look away. “Thank you. Really. I really needed that pep talk.”
I make the mistake of looking up at him again, and, for a split second, I see pure yearning. It’s like our souls vibrate at exactly the same frequency. And I have no idea what to do with that.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Don't let my three stars discourage you. Anna Bright creates and delivers a lush world filled with tiny hidden gems of retellings, intrigue, and romance! Also, Once upon a Time meets Odyssey and the Bachelorette.

Selah lives in Potomac a country independent from England in a parallel world where fairytales and history are woven together. After a public rejection, which really was very humiliating, her step-mother suggests that Selah must sail over the Atlantic, spend two weeks in another country in search for a groom. Three are brought forth, one in England, one in Norge and one from the equivalent of the Russian Empire here...only that it's ruled by Baba Yaga...

I enjoyed the descriptions and how Anna Bright spend time to make me, as a reader, connect with the environment but my missing stars go to the lack of action and a little bit to Selah's character development. I prefer action in my fantasy books and that was a slow read for me. But what kept me going was the book Selah carried with her, which had many tales inside it, featuring also, "Beauty and the Beast". And some of the chapters had openings from great tales, like Homer's Odyssey (I READ ANCIENT GREEK!), Snow White and also code names like Hansel and Gretel.

I did feel that the second groom was the best match for her and I didn't like how the book ended. For those who also love Norse mythology, you'll get a nice surprise too! I also hope that Selah will reunite with her one love (who I'll hope be the one I'm thinking of.)

Review: "Aurora Rising" (The Aurora Cycle #1) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

From the internationally bestselling authors of THE ILLUMINAE FILES comes an epic new science fiction adventure.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They're not the heroes we deserve. They're just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

REVIEW

I have no words to express my feel(ing)s for this beauty! It had everything the duo of the ILLuMINAE files delivered; sass, romance, tragedy, mystery and a good dose of sarcasm as also a squad that deserves to be together! AND HAPPY AND TOGETHER!

I loved every member of the squad and my ships are many and I hope they'll sail to infinity and beyond! Especially Fin and Scarlet as also that HOT SPACE ELF!

"Do moons choose the planets they orbit? Do planets choose their stars? Who am I to deny gravity, Aurora? When you shine brighter than any constellation in the sky?"

*dies of swoons*

What also kept me very invested in finishing the book was the unstoppable action. That while I really enjoyed the banter and the trouble everyone got through as they try to unfold the mystery behind Aurora's existence, the action between planets, carnivorous alien-like dinosaurs (I think) and secrets that expands the whole universe. created a great new world-building that will surely make me yearn for more. The book doesn't give anything away at first and the squad had to solve the puzzle of this secret and moreover, there is sexual tension that it's subtle and filled with awkward moments and humor.

Needless to say that while I read the book, I kept picturing everyone just like in the character portraits they all have! I really need a Netflix animated series, please! The ending left me in tears because I knew that at some point there would be a serious battle that would take one of the members, yet I still hope for the sequel because I WANT EVERYONE TO BE HAPPY!

Read the damn book! It's AMAZING!

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

So here I am after having finished reading Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff and I get the amazing notification that I got approved for SAPPHIRE FLAMES! *cue the fireworks*. I was emotionally drained and yet I scrambled my remaining brain cells and from excitement, I decided to read the ARC.

I finished it in one day.
I am not ok.

Let's take it from the start. Three years have passed since the ending of the original trilogy. Nevada and Rogan have left for Spain and Catalina along with the rest of their family are expecting danger as their trial period as a new-formed House is ending. That means that they have to state their alliances and that other Houses in Houston will try to destroy them.

As Catalina tries to weave through responsibilities, budget issues and a case that will prove to be even more difficult, that's when Alessandro appears! Oh my gorgeous Italian, who jumps through windows James Bond-style and also has quite the wicked humor and sarcasm! I enjoyed Catalina and Alessandro together as they try to solve the case and weave through both the upstate politics and the dark tunnels of assassins and magic.

I seriously didn't expect some scenes while others proved some theories which I had read about on Ilona Andrew's blog. Especially the one with the math; that was one hell of a scary, movie worth amazing scene! On the other hand, some may express...displeasure that Rogan and Nevada are not mentioned much or they don't make an appearance. And that's fine.

Sapphire Flames begins a new tale with old and new characters together and as the first books go, the authors must present said characters from their own point of views with their own fears, love, and secrets. I am sure that the next book will definitely have a scene where Alessandro and Rogan meet. I dread to see what will happen. Also, Catalina's power is amazing and beautiful, being a Siren gives her the power to seduce, beguile people and yet she is very down to earth and fears that Alessandro won't love her truly back.

I cried in the epilogue. I really did because I knew that the game has just started, the real villain is hiding among the heroes and that Catalina made a deal she will not get out of it easily. I want Alessandro and Catalina together, I hope Runa and Burn will also become a couple, that Arabella will get her own story and that Augustine Montgomery will stop being such a cold marble statue and find his own love in the books...or in his own series.

It's advisable to read the Hidden Legacy series first and then dive into this one when it will be released. Now I have to wait for 2020! I don't know how I will survive....

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

If you loved Fantastic Beasts and yet still felt unsatisfied, you will love this upcoming book! In a world filled with magic, humans, wild beasts, Charmers who can command them and secrets, an exiled Charmer will become an unwilling pawn in a secret coup for power. And she will meet an assassin who carries a deadly secret.

I didn't expect to love this book so much! For the past weeks, I had fallen in a book slump and the chance to review this beauty came when I needed it the most. The world-building is amazing (I don't know if there'll be a map in the final copy), but I feel that a map would do wonders. Also, the sheer amount of imagination given to craft these amazing beasts kept me rooted in the spot as I read epic fighting scenes, sweet cuddly creatures and beings with powers to grant wishes.

Leena and Noc were amazing! Slightly enemies, turned to friends and then lovers I rooted for every step in their journey as they both seemed to have more obstacles to cross than their enemies. The rest of the gang, sorry the assassins were amazing and I wanted more pages dedicated to them. I don't know if the next book will focus again on Leena or Noc but I want more of the men and women of the Cruor.

It's an amazing read filled with magic and beasts that will make wish either to have Leena's powers or at least Newt's suitcase.

Double ARC Review: "Nocturna" (A Forgery of Magic #1) by Maya Motayne & "Dark Shores" (Dark Shores #1) by Danielle L. Jensen

Nocturna by Maya Motayne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

The first in a sweeping and epic own voices debut fantasy trilogy—set in a stunning Latinx-inspired world—about a face-changing thief and a risk-taking prince who must team up to defeat a powerful evil they accidentally unleashed. Perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi, Leigh Bardugo, and V. E. Schwab.

To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks.

As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.

After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.

But when Finn and Alfie’s fates collide, they accidentally unlock a terrible, ancient power—which, if not contained, will devour the world. And with Castallan’s fate in their hands, Alfie and Finn must race to vanquish what they have unleashed, even if it means facing the deepest darkness in their pasts.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

A Latinx inspired world, Spanish words which I could understand (after learning said-Spanish) and characters that made me love them and root for them, despite the wrong choices, the fear and that creepy evil power. The system of magic was interesting and the history behind the creation of the kingdom reminded me of the British colonization. Lovely plot and it never let me down.

Liam and Samantha's story continues in this new series by Skye Warren. Mystery, grudges and hidden feelings will emerge.   EXCERPT:

“This the one, Ms. Priss?” I turned in a circle, hating how restrictive and stiff the refined suit felt. There would be no staying on the horse for eight seconds in something like this. I doubted I could even bend over and pull my boots on in this getup. I failed to see how being dressed like I was going to high tea with the queen was going to convince normal men with a little extra cash to buy the junk in my hair. It felt like overkill, but I would chew my tongue off before telling Della that. I knew how much this campaign meant to her, and I needed her to keep me around so I could get paid. .. and get to kiss her again.

Della circled around me, eyes scanning from head to toe. A small frown tugged her perfectly arched brows down into a V, and her lush, soft mouth pulled into a pout I was becoming achingly familiar with. She lifted a hand and touched the knot of the silk tie where it rested at the base of my throat. She fingered the delicate material and heaved a sigh.
“You look perfect, but something is still off.” She met my gaze with a scowl. “Can you try and look a little less like you’re being tortured? That might help the overall image.”
Her snippy tone and the upturn of her nose made me grin. I rolled my head around, causing my neck to pop and my shoulders to relax. Della’s expression softened when I was no longer standing at attention, but she still let out a dejected-sounding sigh and reached for my tie, releasing me from the expensive noose.
“You have a body made for designer clothes, but something is lost when you put them on. I feel like we’re trying to wrap the Mona Lisa in silk or something. Frankly, it’s annoying that you make denim and flannel look just as good as Versace and Prada.”
Once she had the tie off, she told me to go ahead and get back into my own clothes. I asked her what the plan was for the shoot and a brief flare of panic and doubt lit up her catlike eyes. She forced a smile and told me she would figure it out. Since I was totally a fish out of water in this scenario, all I could do was follow orders like a good soldier. I stripped out of the fitted vest and worked on the tiny buttons of the shirt. I was handing them both off to the flirty wardrobe girl who was enjoying the impromptu striptease when Della’s
“Wait a second!” had both of us freezing on the spot. She was looking at me in the mirror, eyes roving over my half-dressed form. She wandered over to where my jeans and boots were tossed in a haphazard pile on the floor. After a second of rooting around, she came toward me, my black wifebeater in one hand and my boots in the other.
“Put these on with the pants.” She looked at the wardrobe girl with a lifted brow and had to snap her fingers in the woman’s face to get her attention.
“Go find me a pair of suspenders, leather if you have them.”
The other woman scurried off to do as she was told and I dropped to the seat to pull on my boots.
“I keep trying to turn you into something better.” I looked up at Della as she snorted out a laugh. “But from the start, you were perfect the way you are.”

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A quick read about Crew and Della, two character who will probably be in the upcoming new series by Jay Crownover! A rodeo star and a fashion owner will clash and fall for each other, as danger lurks around. I like Crew and Della; they have their strong points and their weaknesses but they were so realistic I could help but ship them!

ARC Review: "The First Girl Child" by Amy Harmon

The First Girl Child by Amy Harmon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from Goodreads

From the New York Times bestselling author comes a breathtaking fantasy of a cursed kingdom, warring clans, and unexpected salvation.

Bayr of Saylok, bastard son of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by the curse once leveled by his dying mother. Bartered, abandoned, and rarely loved, she plagued the land with her words: From this day forward, there will be no daughters in Saylok.

Raised among the Keepers at Temple Hill, Bayr is gifted with inhuman strength. But he’s also blessed with an all-too-human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first girl child born in nearly two decades and the salvation for a country at risk.

Now the fate of Saylok lies with Alba and Bayr, whose bond grows deeper with every whisper of coming chaos. Charged with battling the enemies of their people, both within and without, Bayr is fueled further by the love of a girl who has defied the scourge of Saylok.

What Bayr and Alba don’t know is that they each threaten the king, a greedy man who built his throne on lies, murder, and betrayal. There is only one way to defend their land from the corruption that has overtaken it. By breaking the curse, they could defeat the king…but they could also destroy themselves.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is going to be a hard review to write. Not because I didn't enjoy the book. People I plan on re-reading, re-listening to the audiobook and hope that Amy Harmon writes spin-off novellas and invent a way for a certain couple to be together. Needless to say, this is Amy Harmon's finest work in the fantasy genre. I didn't think that "The first Girl Child" would top The Bird and the Sword duology, but it.

In a fantasy world where an island stands in the middle of the sea and clans rule with a king on top. Where monks have the power to choose kings and runes hold magic in them, the story begins with the birth of a boy. Bayr is a bastard whose mother was cheated in love, whose father is power hungry and whose uncle Dagmar is one of those monks. Bayr's mother, curses the people of their land to not give birth to girls and slowly as the decades' span, the curse will wipe out their people.

Bayr grows to be an extraordinary young man with the power of ten men and the heart of a sweet, beautiful soul. And as plots and lies thicken, suddenly the first girl child is born; out of the blue Alba appears and the mysterious Ghost, a young woman, start to live in the monastery too.

The story is told in third POV and spans almost two decades of secrets, plots, power-hungry men who never gave worth to their women before and now they find themselves, almost dying without them. The beauty of this world is the perfect balance between the Norse mythology, Viking lore, magic and a touch mention to Christianity. But the focus is not as much to the religion, while it plays a role, but to the relationships between the characters, the secret love blooming over the years and the fear that it will never be reciprocated.

This world is vast and I hope to see more stories coming from the characters of this novel. When I finished the book, I was happy and yet really sad. Because while I did like the story I realized that I was rooting for another couple too and it was hopeless.

Amy Harmon's writing is stellar and I don't know if my heart can survive another masterpiece by her.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Chosen champion was a sequel worthy of its characters and full of unstoppable movemtn and action. As Vi tries to find a way to reachTaavin, the danger of the epidemic of the White Death spreads and no one is safe anymore. There are many twists and turns in this book with mysyteries and prophecies that may or may not come true.

I also fear that Taavin knows that either he or Vi will dies but I can't confirm it. I hope for the best. There is a plot twist I didn't see it coming and a cliffhanger that made me demand more! I seriously can't wait for the final (?) book in the series!

The Revenge Plan by Linda Kage
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

After I caught my boyfriend cheating, I tried to be mature about it with an amicable split. But he took his retaliation too far, and I have officially had enough. No more Miss Nice Haven.

No one is allowed to lie to me, betray, embarrass, and devastate me, fill me with self-doubt, or put my future at risk, and expect to get away with it. He is going to feel my wrath.

Enter Wick Webster, his archenemy.

Nothing would provoke my ex more than to see me moving on with the one guy he hates most, so that’s exactly what I plan to do.

The only hitch in my brilliant scheme is Wick himself. He’s just gotta be all love-not-war and peace-is-the-only-way. He’s more concerned about helping me heal than seeking my sweet revenge.

And what the hell is it about his soothing presence and yummy looks that calls to me until I forget how much pain I’m in? He’s making it awfully hard to use and abuse him for my malicious means. The damn guy is making me fall for him.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

There is a certain beauty on seeing the characters you love form a previous series appear again and this time their daughter is the protagonist! I am a huge fan of the Forbidden Men series by Linda Kage, but still if you haven't read the books you can read this one as a standalone and then move on to the 'prequel' series.

Haven finds her boyfriend cheating on her with her roommate and she catches them in the act. Running away, she stumbles upon Wick, who knows Haven and after a series of events they end up, sharing an apartment together. Slowly they become friends and as Haven heals over the sting of her cheating boyfriend, she slowly becomes friends with Wick and his family.

The beauty of this book was the intersecting chapters about one "Henry" who is deeply in love with a girl and his adventures in college. There is a surprise here, which personally I caught up with it in the middle of the book. I also liked the way Linda depicted a poisonous relationship, which in my opinion also included verbal abuse. It's not much but (again to my opinion) is subtly mentioned. I enjoyed this book very much and I seriously want more of college adventures and loving characters!
