Title: Beyond the Red
Author: Ava Jae
Publisher: Sky Pony Press
Summary from GoodReads
A story of betrayal, love, and loss—all on a technologically advanced alien planet where monarchy reigns, but lies rule.
Alien queen Kora has a problem as vast as the endless crimson deserts. She’s the first female ruler of her territory in generations, but her people are rioting and call for her violent younger twin brother to take the throne. Despite assassination attempts, a mounting uprising of nomadic human rebels, and pressure to find a mate to help her rule, she’s determined to protect her people from her brother’s would-be tyrannical rule.
Eros is a rebel soldier hated by aliens and human alike for being a half-blood. But that doesn’t stop him from defending his people—at least until Kora’s soldiers raze his camp and take him captive. He is given an ultimatum: be an enslaved bodyguard to Kora, or be executed for his true identity—a secret kept even from him.
When Kora and Eros are framed for the attempted assassination of her betrothed, they flee. Their only chance of survival is to turn themselves in to the high court, where revealing Eros’s secret could mean a swift public execution. But when they uncover a violent plot to end the human insurgency, they must find a way to work together to prevent genocide.

INTERVIEW
Hello Ava and welcome to Milky Way of Books! I am very excited to finally have a chance to chat with you!
1) What inspired you behind the creation of the special dialect of Kora's people?
Well, I’ve always been interested in languages, so when I decided I was going to write a book that took place on another planet, it just seemed natural to me that I’d create a language to go along with it as people native to the new planet would absolutely not speak English. I’ve been exposed to a lot of languages—Spanish in my childhood, Swedish from a friend, and Japanese, Italian, and French in school. So when I started creating a language for the Sepharon, a lot of those influences kind of came together as I decided how I wanted the language to sound and built from there.
2)The human race is a lesser species in your debut. What was the reason behind this choice?
Well, I was loosely inspired from James Cameron’s Avatar, in which humans invade another planet and overpower the native species there and have to fight back—but I asked myself what would happen if when the humans arrived to this other planet, they found that not only was there a native species living on the planet, but that species is very technologically advanced and has an excellent military. I imagined a confrontation that left the human forces destroyed so completely that not only were the survivors not able to leave the planet, but humans back on Earth got the message loud and clear to never return.
Once I had that established, it only made sense that many generations later, humans were still on a lower rung of the social ladder, so to speak, as they never fully recovered.
3)The publishing industry is a hard world. How did you deal with rejection?
Sheer determination, honestly. BEYOND THE RED was my tenth manuscript, and the fifth one I queried, so I was pretty used to rejection by that point. It wasn’t easy, of course—there were times when I really began to doubt that I’d ever be published at all. But once I realized that even if I never got published I wanted to continue to write stories, it kind of became a little easier if only because I learned to love every step of the process. Minus rejection, that is, but I knew if I had to put this manuscript away and try again, I would.
4)What other genres would like to explore besides the world of BEYOND THE RED?
Fantasy! I love fantasy with a burning passion and would love to delve into some fantasy worlds. I’m also definitely open to playing around with some other genres, but science fiction and fantasy are very close to my heart.
5)When can we hope to read more about Kora's and Eros's adventures?
I don’t know! Whether or not more BEYOND THE RED books happen (and if they do, when) are based entirely off external factors that are out of my control, unfortunately. I’m hopeful this will be a question I’ll have the answer to at some point in the near future, but for now, I’m just as curious about the answer as you guys are. :)
Thank you Ava for the interview and I hope to hear more news about the sequel too!
