Summer Reads 2020: Fanfiction, Vampires, Strong Women and Aliens

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Olivia Dade bursts onto the scene in this delightfully fun romantic comedy set in the world of fanfiction, in which a devoted fan goes on an unexpected date with her celebrity crush, who’s secretly posting fanfiction of his own.

Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. While the world knows him as Aeneas, the star of the biggest show on TV, Gods of the Gates, he's known to fanfiction readers as Book!AeneasWouldNever, an anonymous and popular poster.  Marcus is able to get out his own frustrations with his character through his stories, especially the ones that feature the internet’s favorite couple to ship, Aeneas and Lavinia. But if anyone ever found out about his online persona, he’d be fired. Immediately.

April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she’s hidden her fanfiction and cosplay hobby from her “real life” for years—but not anymore. When she decides to post her latest Lavinia creation on Twitter, her photo goes viral. Trolls and supporters alike are commenting on her plus-size take, but when Marcus, one half of her OTP, sees her pic and asks her out on a date to spite her critics, she realizes life is really stranger than fanfiction.

Even though their first date is a disaster, Marcus quickly realizes that he wants much more from April than a one-time publicity stunt. And when he discovers she’s actually Unapologetic Lavinia Stan, his closest fandom friend, he has one more huge secret to hide from her.

With love and Marcus’s career on the line, can the two of them stop hiding once and for all, or will a match made in fandom end up prematurely cancelled?

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

So what can I say about this book? Should I speak about the beauty of the writing? The amazing characters or their love for fanfiction and how pretty much embody the true spirit of a fan?

Both Marcus and April are people with their own insecurities and every day lives. But both are connected via their love for writing fanfiction about their favorite tv series...which is something akin to the final season of Game of Thrones? (you know what I mean admit it).

The problem is that Marcus is the leading actor in the series and April is also a cosplayer for her favorite female character...and they don't know that they are also friends under different names in the fanfiction site they both write on.

I loved this book! It was funny, sexy, and swoony and filled with vulnerability about both characters who despite their outside confidence deserved each other and a big hug.

The book chapters have also commentary of their messages in the fanfiction server they write which also gives clues to their true personalities. The comedy is very refreshing and I also saw in the end of the bok that there would be a sequel following another set of characters! I can't wait to read that one!

I do not need to emphasize it but...READ THIS BOOK!

About the author:

While I was growing up, my mother kept a stack of books hidden in her closet. She told me I couldn't read them. So, naturally, whenever she left me alone for any length of time, I took them out and flipped through them. Those books raised quite a few questions in my prepubescent brain. Namely: 1) Why were there so many pirates? 2) Where did all the throbbing come from? 3) What was a "manhood"? 4) And why did the hero and heroine seem overcome by images of waves and fireworks every few pages, especially after an episode of mysterious throbbing in the hero's manhood?

Thirty or so years later, I have a few answers. 1) Because my mom apparently fancied pirates at that time. Now she hoards romances involving cowboys and babies. If a book cover features a shirtless man in a Stetson cradling an infant, her ovaries basically explode and her credit card emerges. I have a similar reaction to romances involving spinsters, governesses, and librarians. 2) His manhood. Also, her womanhood. 3) It's his "hard length," sometimes compared in terms of rigidity to iron. I prefer to use other names for it in my own writing. However, I am not picky when it comes to descriptions of iron-hard lengths. 4) Because explaining how an orgasm feels can prove difficult. Or maybe the couples all had sex on New Year's Eve at Cancun.

During those thirty years, I accomplished a few things. I graduated from Wake Forest University and earned my M.A. in American History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I worked at a variety of jobs that required me to bury my bawdiness and potty mouth under a demure exterior: costumed interpreter at Colonial Williamsburg, high school teacher, and librarian. But I always, always read romances. Funny, filthy, sweet--it didn't matter. I loved them all.

Now I'm writing my own romances with the encouragement of my husband and daughter. I have my own stack of books in my closet that I'd rather my daughter not read, at least not for a few years. I can swear whenever I want, except around said daughter. And I get to spend all day writing about love and iron-hard lengths.

So thank you, Mom, for perving so hard on pirates during my childhood. I owe you.

REVIEW

I don't usually review J.R. Ward's books because they are amazing and she still is an auto-buy author for me. But this book was a new beginning in the universe of the BDB and I felt that I had to say some words.

Nyx travels into a secret prison searching for her last sister and there she meets the Jackal, another vampire who has suffered a lot and keeps his secrets close.

While this takes us a little away from the core group of the BDB members we do have the appearances of Rhage, whom I adore, Vishous and Wrath. The story mostly centers around Nyx and Jackal as they navigate the prison and try to find a way out.

But it is the new species that stands out. The wolven, which sounds like werewolves but I am not sure how they will tie up to the rest of the lore in the books. J. R. Ward over the years has created amazing mythology behind her worldbuilding with deities and demons angels and...well Devina but this species caught my attention. Also, I do hope that some of the secondary characters survived the ending of this book. I loved them immediately despite their craziness. And Apex? Oh boy, this guy will have a good friend in Zsadist if you get my meaning.

A great introduction into a new series that expands the universe even more.

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Beatrice Clayborn is a sorceress who practices magic in secret, terrified of the day she will be locked into a marital collar that will cut off her powers to protect her unborn children. She dreams of becoming a full-fledged Magus and pursuing magic as her calling as men do, but her family has staked everything to equip her for Bargaining Season, when young men and women of means descend upon the city to negotiate the best marriages. The Clayborns are in severe debt, and only she can save them, by securing an advantageous match before their creditors come calling.

In a stroke of luck, Beatrice finds a grimoire that contains the key to becoming a Magus, but before she can purchase it, a rival sorceress swindles the book right out of her hands. Beatrice summons a spirit to help her get it back, but her new ally exacts a price: Beatrice’s first kiss . . . with her adversary’s brother, the handsome, compassionate, and fabulously wealthy Ianthe Lavan.

The more Beatrice is entangled with the Lavan siblings, the harder her decision becomes: If she casts the spell to become a Magus, she will devastate her family and lose the only man to ever see her for who she is; but if she marries—even for love—she will sacrifice her magic, her identity, and her dreams. But how can she choose just one, knowing she will forever regret the path not taken?

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a pleasant surprise. And it needs more attention too. Set in an alternative historical period which slightly represents the Victorian era, there exists magic that can be harnessed and used. But for women, this is not an advantage. They wear a type of collar which leashes their power and when they get married they have to lose their powers.

Which is almost derogatory, to be honest. Beatrice is a sorceress who seeks a way to not lose her powers as she doesn't want to marry. But when she meets the Lavan siblings, one will try to help her seek a way to have the power she wants while the other will become her suitor and grow to love her. And Beatrice will have to choose between love and freedom to be whom she truly wants.

I liked the story and the premise, the cover is beautiful and it felt quite easy to read. I won't spoil you but my only missing star goes to the almost insta-love feels I got. But other than that this is a really good book.

Taken to Sasor by Elizabeth Stephens
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Mian
Don't run. Don't fight. Just hide. That's all we can do against the Sasor barbarian horde – huge megalithic aliens, born to fight, who can shape shift at will into monsters. We're only human, and me, just a slave among them.

Getting caught is not part of the plan, but when they raid our village, I do the only thing I can think of to spare the whole. I offer myself up to their leader. Infuriating, and strangely funny, I have a lot to learn – his languages and customs, the roles I'm meant to fulfill in his tribe, and how to keep him at arm's length when he's seemingly everywhere, blocking any chances I have to find a mate and keeping me at his side.

Neheyuu
She's funny, this human. A fast learner, already adapting to our language with ease. She's forgiving. Quick to smile, it's easy to smile back. Too easy. She's slipping under my skin, infecting me and my manerak.

The monster that I can become seems more ready to do her will than my own. Like she's controlling it. I should let her go. I should let her find a mate. I should let the tribes that come for her, take her...

My manerak says no. Its defiance is something I've never felt before and I will need to find a way to deny them both – but how can I when my manerak wants her close?

Taken to Sasor is a full-length (95k words), standalone, interracial, shifter, SciFi romance complete with an alpha snakeshifter alien overlord, warrior heroine, fated mates who are also enemies-to-lovers, world building and extra steamy bits. All Xiveri Mates books can be read as standalones, each one with a guaranteed HEA. NO cheating, harem or love triangles. Some dark themes, illusions to abuse, and debatable consent due to intergalactic cultural misunderstandings may be trigger warnings.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have been following this author since my fellow GoodReads friends recommended her books to me. And boy was I surprised? I enjoyed the first two books which featured strong heroines and aliens of all shapes and kinds as all of them navigated intergalactic politics, cultural misunderstandings and their growing feelings.

While each book is loosely connected to each other, I do have a sense that all the couples will meet at some point. The protagonists of this specific book are Mian and Neheyuu. Mian is a human slave to what I think was a human settlement in this planet while Neheyuu is a snake-like shifter who is a chief of his clan.

When he raids Mian's slave camp, he kind of bargains with her as both don't know each other's language and she follows him in his home. As both try to learn about each other and also fall in love, Mian will grow as a woman who is beautiful and strong and brave despite what others thought of her.

This is a really good series that also strives to develop an intricate world-building with diverse and amazing alien forms.

ARC Review: Skyhunter (Skyhunter #1) by Marie Lu

Skyhunter by Marie Lu
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

In Skyhunter, a novel laced with adrenaline and filled with nonstop action, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu creates an immersive world broken by war where the only hope against overwhelming evil lies with a team of young warriors willing to sacrifice everything to save what they love.

The Karensa Federation has conquered a dozen countries, leaving Mara as one of the last free nations in the world. Refugees flee to its borders to escape a fate worse than death―transformation into mutant war beasts known as Ghosts, creatures the Federation then sends to attack Mara.

Still, one Striker refuses to give up hope.

After another devastating battle, Mara seems ready to fall. But when a mysterious prisoner is brought from the front, Talin senses there’s more to him than meets the eye. Is he a spy from the Federation? Or could he be the weapon that will save them all?

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

O my GOSH! What an amazing book this was! Marie Lu knows how to create worlds that leave you in astonishment after you are done and make you carve the next book more! This is no different from this upcoming book where a small nation fights a growing 'Empire' in a tale of loss, identity, and learning to accept trauma and love.

Talin is a refugee from Basea, living in Mara, the last standing nation still fighting against the Karensa Federation. Having lost her voice due to the weapons their enemies used she lives in a nation that does not accept her people and at the same time she fights for freedom along with the elite warrior faction of Strikers, who are trained to fight again the Ghosts, zombie-like creatures experiments of the Federation.

But when a new prisoner, Red, raises new questions about the Federation and the reveal of his identity may change the course of war, Talin will become the center of attention.

I loved the premise and the surprises this book had. Red and Talin were amazing together as they tried to navigate their bond and also what the plans for the Federation were. I loved the descriptions and how powerful Red could be. And also I liked that Talin, Red and their friends tried to save Mara, despite what happened in the end.

Which by the way was a cliffhanger and it left me aching for the next book! I have no idea what will happen and I dread to read it!

Totally recommended as this is yet another amazing book by Marie Lu!

Review: "A Touch of Stone and Snow" (A Gathering of Dragons #2) by Milla Vane

A Touch of Stone and Snow by Milla Vane
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Milla Vane returns to a world of kings, magic, and passion in her exhilarating A Gathering of Dragons series, as a great alliance forms to stand against an evil warlord intent on their destruction.

Danger lurks in the western realms. The Destroyer’s imminent return has sent the realms into turmoil as desperate citizens seek refuge—but there’s no safety to be found when demons and wraiths crawl out from the shadows. Even Koth, a northern island kingdom left untouched by the Destroyer a generation past, is besieged by terrors spawned from corrupt magics.

When Lizzan leads the Kothan army against these terrors, only to see her soldiers massacred and to emerge as the only survivor, she is called a coward and a deserter. Shunned from her home, Lizzan now wanders in solitude as a mercenary for hire, until she encounters a group of warriors seeking new alliances with the northern kingdoms—a group that includes Aerax, the bastard prince of Koth, and the man who sent her into exile.

Though they were childhood friends, Aerax cannot allow himself to be close to the only woman who might thwart his treacherous plan to save their island realm. But when a goddess's demand binds them together, Lizzan and Aerax must find a way to overcome their painful pasts. Or there will be no future for the western realms...

REVIEW

The amazing world Milla Vane has created becomes even more wide in this next installment of her Gathering of Dragons series. This time we move to the Western Realms where a new set of characters who I hope will meet the first ones from the first book, have to face their own struggles, fears and danger as the Destroyer draws closer and closer.

Frankly, I dread to see who this Destroyer is. From the stories told from the first book and to the ones from this one, he must be someone very terrifying to behold. Only just the mention of the destruction of a whole city, the killing, and the raping of the women send shivers of fear.

So in this book, we have an amazing warrior Lizzan who is exiled from her realm of Koth for being a coward. Having PTSD after what she experienced in that battle and growing her sorrow...well in drinking, she will face her past in the presence of Aerax, the bastard Prince of Koth who must gather allies as the Destroyer draws near.

Together they will travel the western Realms facing new and old dangers together and also a quest from Vella, the goddess, will bring them together. I loved Aerax. He was a man who loved Lizzan desperately despite everything that had happened between them and he deserves a hug. Lizzan on the other hand I admired her strength and determination as also how she struggled with the betrayals of her country. But Aerax always believed her and he was steady in his love for her.

The fighting scenes were Netflix/HBO worthy. If this series doesn't become a tv series, then what are they doing?! The mythology is amazing, the worldbuilding stunning and the maps that Milla Vane has on her website have helped me understand their journeys. Though I would prefer to see them in the books, I hope this will happen in the future.

Absolutely amazing! And totally recommended!

One Hot Italian Summer by Karina Halle
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Fortunately, her new powerhouse agent, the formidable Jana Lee, has a solution for her. She can stay at her villa in Tuscany for a month, soak in the sunshine, relax, and find her confidence again. After all, Jana has a lot riding on Grace’s next book, and the last thing she wants is for her reputation as a “super-agent” to be tarnished.

At first the villa is a dream come true for Grace – that is until Claudio Romano shows up one day with his ten-year old son, Vanni, in tow. Turns out, this is Claudio’s house, and Claudio happens to be her agent’s ex-husband from long ago. Thanks to their annual father and son bonding trip being cancelled, Claudio and Vanni are here to stay.

So is Grace.

With the three of them sharing the same house, Grace’s writing plans are thrown out the window. But even if she’s not pounding the keyboard, she’s still finding beauty and inspiration... in none other than Claudio. He's unlike any man Grace has met before. He’s smart, charming, and wickedly sexy, plus a great father to Vanni. He’d be the perfect summer fling – if only he wasn’t completely off-limits.

Or he could be exactly what she needs.

At this point, I am only going to rub the books by Karina Halle at your face and demand you read them! I have never seen a book and characters I didn't enjoy reading by Karina and her newest one wasn't an exception!

With background gorgeous Italy and Tuscany, a grieving author must find the courage to discover herself and also fall in love. Grace was a delight to read and see through her eyes both the beauty of Italy and also how gorgeous Claudio was.

I loved how both found a way to each other and how as both artists were able to connect over their shared love for creating wither it is though pages of books or with marble. Not to mention that the food and the steamy descriptions were a testament to how Karina can make her readers both swoony and hungry!

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

THIS BOOK! THIS BOOK! IT WAS AMAZING! A bargain with an ancient force leads a young woman in an immortal journey through time and history as she lives through major events. Victoria Schwab's spectacular storytelling shines through this book, which is by far the best she has written! (not that the others aren't but this one is on the top!)

Addie LaRue wants to escape her life in her 18th-century french village so, in the day of her wedding, she makes a bargain with something that is between a demon and a nature god. But in her bargain, she gets an even more sinister outcome. She is not only immortal but also cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. Meaning that when someone turns their eyes away from her she will be forgotten.

Fast forward to the 21st century when Addie meets Harry the first person, who doesn't forget her when they meet a few times. And from there the story goes back and forth as it explores Addie and her curse, her...growing attachment with Luc, the villain who gets a name and Harry.

The writing was amazing! Filled with emotion, poetic descriptions and a strong sense of vulnerability as Addie lives through History almost alone with her also growing as a character and also as a heroine.

My most favorite line of the books was:

"Books, she has found, are a way to live a thousand lives, or to find strength in a very long one."

This actually encompasses everything I do love in reading and plus Addie did find a way to leave her mark through History. By making artists she met remembering the idea of her. You see in the book there are descriptions of art and the estimated amount of their worth. I do not know if there will be pictures in the final copies (as I read the ARC0 but if that happened it would be amazing!

The ending gutted me and also offered me a strange satisfaction, as I was not completely happy with it but at the same time satisfied with how the story ended. You will have to read it to understand this bipolar sense I got as I cried over my Kindle and also was left shocked.

Totally recommended!

ARC Review: "Hollen the Soulless" (Dokiri Brides #1) by Denali Day

Hollen the Soulless by Denali Day
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

He’ll mark her flesh. She’ll claim his heart.

Always the dutiful daughter, Lady Joselyn is weeks away from marrying a rival lord in order to secure the future of her father’s house. However, she suddenly finds herself in the clutches of an ancient beast she’s only ever heard of in legends. More terrifying than that is the beast’s master, a wild man who insists Joselyn is his bride by right, and plans to seal his claim in blood.

Wyvern-rider, Hollen, has finally captured the woman of his dreams, though he quickly learns waiting for her was less than half the battle. His new bride wants nothing to do with him and Hollen knows he only has one chance to change her mind. To win her over, he’ll do whatever he must, even if it means keeping secrets.

Their wills pitted against each other, Joselyn will go to any lengths to free herself from this savage and fulfill her marital contract. Her father’s life depends upon it. But even as she plots her escape, Joselyn begins to wonder if one can also be bound by a duty to their own heart.

Author’s Note: This is not a shifter romance. The Dokiri men are savage enough in their manly forms. That being said, this book features subdued sexual content. Enjoy the heat but don’t expect to get singed.

Trigger warning: This novel plays on the trope of abduction. While Dokiri men won’t let anything keep them from the woman they love, even that woman herself, all sexual acts between the hero and heroine are consensual.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Hollen the Soulless, is the son of Sven the Collector, whom you can meet and read his story in the prequel novella. What kept my interest, in this case, was the strong and beautiful Jocelyn who tried to escape many times despite her misguided loyalty to her father and also how patient with her Hollen was. I know that the whole "abduct your bride and she will love you" thing his people have is not a way to choose a wife, but I found that Hollen respected her and admired her strength. The adventure was also amazing and also the wyverns! Who needs horses when you have dragons!

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

One of the best endings I could ever imagine for this couple! Caden and Brighton deserved this ending with all the laughs and fear and uncertainty but also the power of knowing that your loved ones will be by your side. I enjoyed seeing Brighton growing as a character and Caden was just perfect. Some other Fae could also get some good lessons from him!

Ok, Tink was hilarious as always and the rest of the cameos offered a good memory from the Wicked series.
I don't feel ready to leave this world just yet. I feel that there's going to be something that will bring us back to New Orleans and these amazing characters! And the ending of this novella series was just sweet!

Release Day Blitz: "Fall for Me" (Going Dutch, #1) by Hazel Harding

Summary from GoodReads

Two weeks of no-strings fun with local stone mason Lex de Vries was a total no-brainer.

Chances of me getting over-attached? Literally zero, because let me put it like this:

Lex may have a body worthy of its own marble statue, but the guy’s going nowhere. He’s stuck in a rut in the city he was born in, while Amsterdam’s been nothing for me but a step up the career ladder.

Anna Marcellino, Global Head of Marketing. I’ve worked years to see my name on that door at our New York office, and I’m counting the days before I catch my flight to the promotion of a lifetime.

Only Lex and I don’t just get physically close. It wasn’t part of the deal, but we get to know each other. And boy, he’s not what I expected.

Yes, the mind-blowing sex is the best I’ve ever had, but it's more than just that. Lex listens. He gets me. And I get him. Our connection runs deep.

Too deep.

There’s just too much I can't give up.

ARC Review: "Bookish and the Beast" (Once Upon a Con #3) by Ashley Poston

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

In the third book in Ashley Poston's Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.

Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.

On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he's forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.

When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.

But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Ashley Poston returns to her wonderful world of geeks, fans and lovers o sci-fi in this third installment of her "Once Upon a Con" series! And it couldn't be better as this is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast, in a beautiful setting with libraries, cute dogs a spoiled actor and a young girl who is also strong and brave and every bit a contemporary Belle.

Vance is "exiled" to a castle-house by his stepfather as his actions resulted in him being the black sheep in the cinema and tv industry. But when Rosie literally falls into his life, they will both discover that their shared love for the book series they both know and their common hardships can bring them closer and well..." there might be something there that wasn't there before".

This was a very cute book. It was light-hearted and funny with a dose of references to the book series every character in this story knows. Seriously I think that Ashley Poston should write this book series just so I can read it!

I liked the growth of Vance from a spoiled boy to a maturing man. Rosie's influence and her kindness also played a role. And the cameos from the other characters from the other books were also a great touch!

Definitely recommended!

ARC Review: "Black Sun" (Between Earth and Sky #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

From the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn comes the first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy, inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial event proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio, is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created an epic adventure exploring the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in the most original series debut of the decade.

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Now this is a book worth adapting to a tv series as it touches a period not known to much with a thread of magic, mystery and vibrant civilizations!

Black Sun takes place in the pre-Columbian city or Tova where political intrigues among the priesthood and the clans may cause a revolution while at the same time a ship begins its trip to Tova where Xiala has a very strange passenger. A blind man, Serapio, whose powers hide a deadly destiny.

I don't want to spoil this, but as someone who did a prehistoric course in uni I have to tell you that Rebecca Roanhorse manages what an archeologist difficulty can. To deliver the realism of this world, with its gold and jewels, cacao and spices, boats and mysticism which still is shrouded in mystery even today.

I would say that Rebecca takes her time to build upon her characters, with their backstories, and how these seemingly unrelated POVs come together in the end in one of the most epic revelation scenes I've read in a while.

I enjoyed Serapio and Xiala; she is strong (reminding me the drunk version of Okoye for a reason) and my heart ached for Serapio, whose destiny is quite the dark one.

You will definitely to read this when it comes out; it's history, fantasy and adventure altogether in a balanced mix with a soft thread of romance in it.
Rebecca Roanhorse delivers an astonishing new series which I hope will astound you all too!

REVIEW

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Boys meets Superman in this story where superheroes and villains exist and you can't actually know who the true villain is. Alana has escaped her abusive boyfriend and take the job of housesitting until the most dangerous villain, The Gray, breaks in and threatens her. But soon they start to grow on one another and then more secrets begin to unveil as The Gray is not who everyone think he is.

Trigger warnings for abuse and violence here. I know that this book may not be for all of you but this story was dark and while I had some issues on how quickly Alana's and Cain's relationship escalated, I definitely enjoyed how strong Alana became as circumstances changed and she discovered the truth.

The story is dark and gripping with action and to be honest I would like to see this continuing as a series, exploring other "heroes" and "villains".

About the author:

D.S. “Dee” Wrights was born 29th March 1980 in Germany. Her name is a pen name, and she describes writing as her passion and calling. Dee speaks three languages fluently, English, German and Dutch, and some other rudimentary.
Although she started writing at an early age and two short stories were published during high school, one as a school project and one in a regional newsletter – Dee never dared of thinking to pursue a writing career. Until she started writing fanfiction and readers encouraged her to publish The Beast And Me as an ebook in May 2014.
Dee worked at a publishing house at which she earned insight into the work, process, and production of publishing books. That was the reason why she chose to do all the work herself, apart from proofreading.
When talking about her novels, Dee explains that she loves to dive into the mindset of different characters, especially those of villains and anti-heroes. However, in addition to that, she enjoys writing women who start off as weak and grow through their experiences in her books and end up being their own hero.

The question "Why do you want to be my friend?" is meant seriously. If you have more friends than books, or your answer doesn't tell me anything, I most likely won't accept the request.
