Double Review: "Muse of Nightmares" (Strange the Dreamer #2) by Laini Taylor & "Dark Harmony" (The Bargainer #3) by Laura Thalassa

summary from GoodReads

Sarai has lived and breathed nightmares since she was six years old.

She believed she knew every horror and was beyond surprise.

She was wrong.

In the wake of tragedy, neither Lazlo nor Sarai are who they were before. One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep.

Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice—save the woman he loves, or everyone else?—while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. But is she? Sometimes, only the direst need can teach us our own depths, and Sarai, the Muse of Nightmares, has not yet discovered what she's capable of.

As humans and godspawn reel in the aftermath of the citadel's near fall, a new foe shatters their fragile hopes, and the mysteries of the Mesarthim are resurrected: Where did the gods come from, and why? What was done with thousands of children born in the citadel nursery? And most important of all, as forgotten doors are opened and new worlds revealed: Must heroes always slay monsters, or is it possible to save them instead?

Love and hate, revenge and redemption, destruction and salvation all clash in this astonishing and heart-stopping sequel to the New York Times bestseller, Strange the Dreamer.

REVIEW

The epic ending to this duology had everything I love in a book by Laini Taylor. Fantastic world-building, unforgettable characters, a new dictionary to go through as also coded messages in the front and the back of the book.
And Lazlo, let's not forget my sweet blue boy!

The story picks up right from where it ended but also adding in a new narrative which, while it doesn't seem to connect at first with everything going on in the city of Weep, in the end it all resolves in a very tragic way. Ruby, Sparrow, and Feral were a delight to read as also Nero who also slowly found his own self-worth. Minya too just slightly got redeemed. Although what she does to Sarai and Lazlo at the beginning of the book is horrible.

But what made me love the series, even more, were the references to the Seraphim. How the Angels began traveling through the worlds, like flipping the pages of a book until they met with the Devouring. And how, as Sarai wonders at the end of the book, if they will hopefully find SOMEONE to make a BODY for her! You know what that means if you've read the previous books!

I really hope to have more books set in the expanding universe Laini Taylor has created and maybe even make all her characters meet each other!

The first book of the series

About the author:

Hi! I write fantasy books. My latest is STRANGE THE DREAMER, about a young librarian, a mythic lost city, and the half-human children of murdered gods. Check it out :-) Before that I wrote the DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE trilogy, which has been translated into 32 languages. It's about a blue-haired art student raised by monsters, a broken angel, and a war that has raged for 1000 years in another world. I also wrote LIPS TOUCH: THREE TIMES, which was a National Book Award finalist, and the DREAMDARK books. As well as various short stories and novellas.

Thanks for reading!!

summary from GoodReads

There are worse things than death. Things that lurk in the shadows and slip into your dreams. Things that have no business existing. Things that once slept … but have now awoken.

For Callypso Lillis, the fae magic that now runs through her veins is equal parts curse and good fortune. For the very thing that bonds her to Desmond Flynn, the King of the Night, also makes her vulnerable to the Thief of Souls, a man who wants to break the world … and Callie along with it.

But it’s not just the Thief whose shadow looms over the Otherworld. Des’s father is back from the dead, and he wants revenge on the son who sent him to the grave in the first place.

Des and Callie must figure out how to stop both men, and time is running out. Because there are forces at play working to tear the lovers apart once and for all … and unfortunately for them, death is no longer the worst thing to fear.

REVIEW

Ah here is another series I am sad to see it go. After ACOWAR, Throne of Glass and Strange the Dreamer, one of my favorite series by Laura Thalassa has come to an end too.

I have to admit that the plot was even more dreadful with fighting, lots of steamy scenes and an ending worth smiling with glee at. Des and Callie are a match made in night and dreams and I loved the banter and determination. I also knew that Callie was going to rock as Queen even in the direst circumstances.

Another detail I noticed was the primorial mention to Darkness, but in its ancient Greek name as also a slight touch of the Orpheus and Euridice myth. But the couple will be one of my favorite and unforgettable ones...right next to Rhysand and Feyre. ;)

About the author:

Found in the forest when she was young, Laura Thalassa was raised by fairies, kidnapped by werewolves, and given over to vampires as repayment for a hundred year debt. She’s been brought back to life twice, and, with a single kiss, she woke her true love from eternal sleep. She now lives happily ever after with her undead prince in a castle in the woods.

… or something like that anyway.

When not writing, Laura can be found scarfing down guacamole, hoarding chocolate for the apocalypse, or curled up on the couch with a good book.
