EXCERPT

“Gemma,” I whisper softly. Before I know what I’m doing, I’m raising her palm to my lips and kissing along her scar. She smells so good, feels even better.
She lets me do it for a moment then she awkwardly clears her throat.
Don’t make me let go, I think. Please don’t make me let go.
The rustle in the bushes is back again. Gemma jerks her hand away, as if we’re about to be caught by Nick the Peeping Tom, as if we’re doing something wrong.
Are we doing something wrong?
Suddenly the air around us fills with squeals, and the rustling increases. The nearest bush to us at the base of the yard, near the fence, starts to move back and forth.
I stand up out of my chair to get a better look and see what looks to be little creatures waddling out of the bushes and heading for the side of the house. Once they hit a patch of light coming from the house, I can see what they are.
Little blue penguins.
“What the fuck?” I say softly, feeling like my mind has just imploded. “What the hell are those?”
“Little blue penguins,” she says proudly.
I turn to her in disbelief. “Are you serious?” I thought I was making that up. In my head.
She nods. “Yup. Little blue penguins.”
And she’s right. They’re about a foot high, miniature versions of the ones I’ve seen on TV, and they’re entirely blue in color. I thought it was just the darkness playing tricks on me but no, once they hit the light, you can see the color on their oily feathers.
“I don’t get it,” I say, watching as the last of their group quickly scampers out of sight. That might have been the cutest and weirdest thing I have ever seen.
“You never head of them?” she asks. “They probably have a burrow under the house. It’s actually quite common for beach houses.”
“Look, I wasn’t lying when I said I didn’t do a whole lot of research about the country.”
“I can see that,” she says. “Well, how about that, then.”
“How about that,” I say, sitting back down. The penguins’ magical appearance has somehow taken Gemma’s heartbreaking story to another place, and she’s quick to jump on the transition. She tells me all about the interesting birdlife in New Zealand, from yellow-eyed penguins on the Otago Peninsula down south, to the Kea—cheeky green parrots that live in the snow-covered Alps. She’s animated as she tells me all she knows, and I absorb it like a sponge.
I drink my beer and she goes back to drinking hers, and before Nick, Amber, and the Irish show up all sloshed, she’s painted a beautiful picture of what’s to come. I can only hope I’ll continue to be part of the picture.

Review: "Sachael Dreams" (The Mine Series, #1) by Melody Winter

Sachael Dreams (The Mine Series, #1)Sachael Dreams by Melody Winter
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

Twenty-two-year-old Estelle Bailey has had enough of busy city-life and her hot-tempered ex. She escapes to the seclusion and peace of her family’s clifftop home in Ravenscar, where the soothing solitude whispers to her soul as strongly as the sea itself does. But her newfound contentment is interrupted when a mysterious man—a Sachael, master of seduction—joins her midnight swim unexpectedly.

Estelle struggles against his charm and the overpowering attraction she feels for him. He offers her a life she never could have imagined, a life beneath the waves . . . but at what cost? Before she can decide, she’s captured, ensnared by the Sect, a secret enemy of the Sachaels, becoming a pawn in a war she knew nothing about.

Now, she’s left with a new choice—escape the clutches of the Sect and flee into the ocean, or side with her alluring, intimidating captor and destroy the Sachaels forever. Can she turn her back on the man she might love, or will the secret of her heritage change everything?

Set against a picturesque backdrop, Sachael Dreams is the first in a new series, exploring themes of romance, love, and identity, and the struggle that happens when all three collide.

 REVIEW

I recieved and eARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review!

Sachael Dreams is a story about...mermaids. Well, mermen to be precise :)

Estelle lives on Ravenscar an almost isolate place, save for the small village and the center where her mother lives, after the death of Estelle's father. When one night, under the full moon, she meets a mysterious man, who is much more than she believes, then an adventure begins.

I have read many books about mermaids. Some were good other seemed a little more like a bad copy of Ariel. But on this novel, we have imagination, livid descriptions and a heroine who despite the odds, she becomes strong enough to fight for her life. Despite also the number of men in this book, there is no love triangle/square and any geometrical size of sorts (which was my main fear).

Azariah is quite interesting, since he defies everything his kind does in order to be with Estelle and Ontores? I would love that guys face plastered in the sand. ;) The book left many open sides, which I would love to see on the next book and I am sure Melody will live up to her reputation to do that!

Review: "The Madman's Daughter" (The Madman's Daughter #1) by Megan Shepherd

The Madman's Daughter (The Madman's Daughter, #1)The Madman's Daughter by Megan Shepherd
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Summary from GoodReads

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.

REVIEW

The classics meet the Young Adult genre on this story of mystery, deception and love.

Juliet has lost her Mother and her father has disappeared after the horrible accusations oh him abusing his talents as a surgeon. When she meets again with Montgomery, a boy she used to know and even love, she gets the chance to find her father and return to him.
When Edward, a castaway, also joins them on the mysterious island where her father lives, secrets will be revealed and death will haunt them.

I found the idea of using the classic tale of Dr. Moreu's island as a base quite interesting and at the same time I was drawn to the stuggle of Juliet. She is trying to live with the strict rules of 19th century London and at the same time she is strong and willing to defend herself.

There was a part when I thought that a love triangle would appear but this was cleared close to the end of the book. The ending was a cliffhanger for me and I loved it. It makes you even more willing to hunt down for the next book and I hope to get the chance to read it! :)

Until then for me this book is a solid 5 star!

Review: "The Winner's Curse" (The Winner's Trilogy #1) by Marie Rutkoski

 REVIEW

When you finally get THIS book in your hands you get all jumpy and giddy! After all the amazing reviews I read, all the blog tours I followed, I was glad to get a copy of my own!

"The Winner's Curse" follows Kestrel, the General's daughter who must choose, either to marry or enlist in the army. When she buys Arin, a slave with gray eyes and secrets of his own, she will discover that love can appear, even in the most diring places.

The most important part of the whole book, except from the world-building and the descriptions and the social standings is refusal; refusal from both main characters of their feelings for each other. Arin is the first to understand Kestrel and Kestrel even reaches the point to deny everything in order to save finally Arin.

The book ends with a strong cliffhanger, which I will follow on the second book! This is a story for those who want something more than insta-love or building steaming scenes. There's angst and death, tears and love. I am sure this book and series will be unforgettable.

The second book of the series: (click the cover for going into AMAZON)

Book two of the dazzling Winner's Trilogy is a fight to the death as Kestrel risks betrayal of country for love.

The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement... if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.

As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

REVIEW

I recieved an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Gentle Chains is a story set in a space opera/sci-fi background. Told by dual POV the story follows a brother and a sister as they are torn from each other and they try to survive on the hostile new enviroments they are thrown into.

I enjoyed the setting, the world building and the conflicts all the heroes got into in order to save those they love. Chosi and her powers are really amazing and I loved how she worked with the darken. Juhan and Sadi form an alliance which will form into love and they become the center of political manipulations.

A strong new novel with a fresh story! I hope to read the next book soon!

 REVIEW

Another amazing novel from the author who took dystopian, politics and inner struggle and named it "Article 5". That series was a non-stop run for life and love and loved it.

On "Glass Arrow", a world where every person would hate, women and girls are sold like cattle. Aya and her family try to escape the Trackers who want to take the girls and sell them, until Aya is caught and through her eyes we see the monstrosity of this society.
Her only solace is Kiran a mute boy with deep secrets of his own.

Aya. A girl every blogger, fan of strong heroines will enjoy since she doesn't stop to fight, care and love those she cares for. She wants to be independent in a world of greed and sickness and her beliefs, which in a way they remind me of Native Americans, are really original.

The world building was also something I hadn't seen in other dystopian and if there would ever be a chance to see more from Aya and her company, I would take it. The novel is standalone but there is still place for the story to become more in lengh.

REVIEW

I found about this book as I searched for something new on the sci-fi genre. Then the cover was revealed and I liked the book even more. Then I finally got the book in my hands...

And what did I find?

Rho is from Cancer, a beautiful contellation with vivid seas and honest, good people. When tragedy strikes she will find herself in a very difficult position and then her adventure will begin. Along with her is Mathis, her Guardian and Hysan a Libran with witts and humor.

Now here's the thing. I don't, really, really don't like love triangles. And after the ending of the first book, I hope nothing similar will be repeated. I will stay at that.
On the other hand this book had the greatest world-building I have ever seen. It was truly beautiful, original and the concerpt of the evil was also something between magic and physics. Rho is a timid character but as the story progresses she becomes stronger. Mathias and Hysan also add on the spice along with a row of secondary characters who either help or try to stop Rho from her mission. Some scenes between the protagonists were really great but some others, ehh, not so nice *shrugs*.

As for the second book, I really want to see more romance and this time, please make it worth. Overall, this was a good debut.

Enlisted to accompany Naasir, Andromeda, a young angelic scholar with dangerous secrets, is fascinated by his nature—at once playful and brilliant, sensual and brutal. As they race to find the Sleeping archangel before it’s too late, Naasir will force her to question all she knows...and tempt her to walk into the magnificent, feral darkness of his world. But first they must survive an enemy vicious enough to shatter the greatest taboo of the angelic race and plunge the world into a screaming nightmare…

Pre-order on Amazon! Archangel's Enigma (Guild Hunter)

Now, maybe some of you are not well accustomed with this novel BUT here is the first one of the series which has also made Nalini known for her work!

Summary from GoodReads

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.

Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

About the author:

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.
